How Treats Affect Your Dog's Diet

By Dick Felleman

You know the importance of choosing a healthy diet for your pet. You have taken the time and effort to consult with the veterinarian about a healthy and nutritious dog food. Whether you choose dried food, canned dog food, or make it from scratch, you may be overlooking something extremely important in your dog's diet.

Do you occasionally give your best friend a treat from the table or a rawhide to chew? These treats may seem like a simple snack or tidbit, but they really can add up. You may not have considered it before, but any and all treats that you give your pet are a part of your dog's diet. The question now becomes, how significant are treats in your dog's diet? Do you give your dog a treat once a day in the evening while watching television, or do you scatter Milk Bones throughout the day for each cute look or adorable pet trick?

The type of treats you give your dog also makes a difference in your dog's diet. Do you pass out cookies and scraps from dinner, or maybe a piece of popcorn or two? Junk food for you becomes junk food for your pet. In fact, some healthy foods for you are not good for your dog. Raisins are a healthy snack for humans to munch on between meals, but they can be detrimental to the health of your dog. Keep your dog's diet healthy even during snack time with treats.

Rawhides are an area of controversy. Some pet owners and vets feel they do not make a good treat for your pet. Others feel that rawhides provide entertainment and good dental health for your dog. Find out what your vet recommends. If you decide to allow rawhides in your dog's diet, avoid them in excess. They can create thin stools and provide many empty calories.

Your dog views a treat as just that, a special treat between meals. For the most part, dog's don't care if you give them a baby carrot, rawhide chew, or Milk Bone. They are happy to get the snack. If you find you provide numerous treats during the course of the day, you may need to modify your dog's diet to avoid maintaining a healthy weight. Giving your pet a whole bunch of treats sure is fun for both you and your dog, but can lead to serious health troubles.

Consider altering your dog's diet by giving him or her less treats. Instead of a large Milk Bone, for example, break the treat into several smaller pieces and distribute them one at a time. This will have your dog eating less between meals.

Ice cubes, small bits of apple, and baby carrots are terrific healthy treat ideas to consider when choosing a healthy diet for your dog. Such treats make little difference overall and make monitoring your dog's daily intake much easier for you. This way, you can focus solely on the food consumed during mealtime. A dog's diet needs to be healthy to ensure a long and happy life for your pet.

Usable Information About Fly Rugs

By Cecil Howell

Fly rugs protect from cold weather, biting insects, dirt and dust, and are used only within the confines of the stable. They're used at night when the temperature drops because it's more difficult for the horse to stay warm when he's standing still. When stabled for the day, use a lighter weight blanket, or no blanket at all. Fly rugs are thinner and looser than turnout rugs to allow the horse to sleep or lie down comfortably.

Many horse owners use a stable rug whenever the weather is cold or windy. Other horse owners never, or rarely use them because they prefer to let the horses natural winter coat grow to protect the animal. Take into account the health, coat type, and age of the stabled horse. A horse that's older, ill, or recently clipped will need a rug in cold weather.

A horse that is cold stands rigid with his tail down. On very cold nights, you may want to layer blankets. While he's wearing a blanket, feel the skin under the rug to see if he's perspiring. If he is, he's too hot. Remove the blanket or swap to a lighter weight blanket.

Blankets are sold by length in three inch increments. Measure your horse in a horizontal line along the animals side from the center front chest to the base of the tail. Modern rugs are designed for safety with a breaking point so the rug and/or fasteners will break if the animal becomes tangled or caught on something.

A proper fitting stable rug will cover from neck to tail, and some have neck extensions to cover from ears to tail. They are fastened in three places, the neck, chest, and tail. The fit should be snug but not tight with room for a hand between the animal and the fabric or the fasteners. The horse's belly shouldn't show. The best way to be sure you have a proper fit is to observe the animal with the blanket on.

There are many sizes, colors, weights, and materials to choose from. Most are made from synthetic fabric, quilted or padded, and designed to breathe, allowing moisture to evaporate if the horse perspires. Fleece blankets are often used as an under blanket in extreme cold, or as lightweight stable rugs on cool nights.

Blankets come in three weights. Less than 150 grams is lightweight. Medium weight is 150-300 grams. Heavyweight is 300 grams and up. Lightweight blankets are for chilly fall and spring weather. Medium weights are good for a clipped horse or one with a thin coat. Heavyweights are for the coldest weather. Also for very cold weather there are styles available with full necks to protect from the ears back.

Fly rugs should be checked for condition everyday. They should be free of tears with buckles in good working condition. Never leave a wet blanket on your horse, shivering can lead to illness. Also a dirty blanket is irritating to the skin, so have a supply of clean blankets available. Don't use blankets interchangeably between horses. This can spread bugs and skin infections. Hang a wet blanket on a rug rack until it's completely dry so it won't get moldy or rot. Keep clean and dry blankets in a warm and dry place.

Why Do Dogs Get Anxious And How Can You Help Them When They Do?

By Venice Marriott

Dogs get anxious for all sorts of reason and while some dogs are anxious by character and will always need plenty of comfort, other dogs will develop anxieties because of a bad experience or a major change in their life or situation.

Many dogs that come from a rescue are anxious dogs, both as a result of their experience of being left or given up to a rescue and because of the unusual situation of a rescue, which is often full of other worried dogs. (That is no criticism of rescue centres, because they do a great job, but exactly the way they explained it to me).

Sometimes dog anxiousness can be so intense that they'll shake or run and hide at the mention of the word 'walk ', and thunderstorms and fireworks are classic situations that may set a dogs anxiety off.

Now and again anxiety can be more of short term problem where for instance a dog that has got a health problem can suddenly become anxious as they feel more vulnerable. In some other cases the anxiousness will set in over time, such as when dogs age, especially if there are younger dogs around them.

What makes dogs anxious is not necessarily simple to understand as dogs can react badly to most anything. I've heard dog lovers say their dog is scared of men, or beards, or anyone wearing a hat, or the sound of one actual newsreaders voice... The list is both weird and endless.

The Best Way To Calm An Anxious Dog

If you take a look at the enormous range of things that can make your dog anxious, from being scared by nature, through bad experiences, to being afraid of loud noises and having unexplainable fears, it is perhaps not what they do that matters, but how you respond to their stress which will make a difference to your dog.

Absolutely key to helping your dog relax is to be calm yourself. Dogs are extremely sensitive and if you tense up when they get anxious or begin worrying yourself, they're going to pick up on that and it'll simply confirm that they have every reason to be concerned. Basically, your dog will be thinking, if you're worrying too , there must be something wrong and they were right to be anxious in the 1st place.

An anxious dog will also benefit very much from you being very obviously the leader of the pack as in nature, the rest of the pack will take their lead from the what the Alpha dog does. This means that if the leader is calm and not worried about what is happening, they will stay calm too.

Anxious dogs have frequently assumed they're leader of the pack and so accountable for decision making and the packs safety. This is a hard job for a dog in a human world as often they do not understand it, that means anything from the postman, to somebody on a bike, or even on the TV may be a threat that they react strongly too.

One of the most useful things you can do for an anxious dog is learn the way to show them that you are the pack leader and in time they are going to learn to trust you and your judgement, which will immediately reduce their anxiety.

Cat Litter Boxes - What You Should Consider Before Purchasing one

By Simon Alves

All cat owners need to consider what kind of litter box to get. Options range from inexpensive litter pans to state of the art self-cleaning models that cost a couple hundred dollars. You'll need to consider the number of cats you own, your budget, and whether you want to pay extra for automatic cleaning. Let's take a look at different types of litter boxes and their advantages.

Some people don't want to waste a lot of money on litter boxes so they go with the least expensive option. You should at least take a look at the features available in other boxes such as those that clean themselves and those that look like they belong in your home. What you will read below is a review of some of the different litter boxes available and the elements that make them special.

If you're starting off with a kitten, you have to get a litter box for it right away. But a kitten should have something very basic such as a square and open box that is easy to see and get into. Fancy models, like self cleaning ones, aren't appropriate for kittens less than eight weeks old. Your best approach for kittens is to start with a basic box and purchase something fancier later if you want.

The self cleaning boxes made by LitterMaid save you the trouble of having to clean it yourself while still being less expensive than other models. These are designed to automatically clean away the waste as soon as your cat leaves the litter box. The box has a rake that automatically deposits the solids into a covered container. If you only have one cat, you only need to change the container once a week. The LitterMaid Elite Basic Automatic Self Cleaning Litter Box sells for about $150 but may be found online for less.

An inexpensive option to litter box control is the Booda Dome Clean Step Litter Box . the Booda Dome Clean Step Litter Box is a covered box large enough for two cats. The elevated ramp and special design keep litter in the box and not around your home. You'll keep the odor out of your home with the air filter on this box. There are a lot of good features at a very low cost around $30 for the Booda Dome Clean Step Litter Box .

There are many sizes and styles of kitty litter boxes, available in various prices. When choosing a litter box, be sure to consider the personality of your cat. Most cats can adjust, however, if you want to change their habits. There are more options today than ever before, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one that meets your needs.

Suggestions on the 1st Night with a Band New Puppy.

By Bev Langford

Bringing home a new puppy is a fun time. You've probably spent a lot of time choosing a breed, size and personality of a young dog that will fit in with your lifestyle.

Most puppies will suffer from some level of dog anxiety in those first few weeks. Here are some guidelines to make your first night with your new pup much easier.

Staying Inside.

It is a good idea to keep you new little dog indoors at night for the 1st week. Your new pup will not likely be house-trained, so keep them in a room over night that's easy to clean like the laundry room or bathroom.

Lay out masses of paper so accidents are easy to deal with. Do not feel tempted to put your new little dog in the bedroom with you, they won't settle and you don't want to start developing bad habits.

Bedtime "How to set up your puppy's bed.

On the 1st night it's a smart idea to set up their bed with a hot water bottle underneath a blanket so your puppy will be warm.

Your puppy will be comfortable having their mother and siblings around them at night and the heat from a hot water bottle will help simulate the body heat they are used to. Also place an old fashioned ticking clock in the room, this could simulate the mum's heartbeat and supply a rhythmical noise to help your puppy sleep.

Just before bedtime.

30 minutes before bedtime, play with your puppy to attempt to tire them out. Introduce some puppy toys and puppy chew toys and enter into some full play.

Then ten to 15 minutes before bedtime attempt to calm the little puppy down by light petting or cuddling. Once your puppy is looking exhausted or is going to sleep, pop them in to their bed and say "bedtime". When your young dog is calm, try offering some slightly warmed puppy milk (lactose free) so your little puppy has a full stomach which will help induce sleep.

If you want to attend to your young dog in the night, only go in once they've been crying for a few minutes, give them a quick pat and say "bedtime'" as you put them back into bed. Again, don't be encouraged to take your new young dog into your room or bed. Do not forget to start out how you want to continue.
