At what age should a male dog be allowed to mate?

By Jerry Welsh

Gosh, my dog has barely left puppyhood but it is already mounting my friend's pet. A male dog's interest in sex starts very early. Dogs that still have the chubby and cuddly appearance of puppies will be seen humping and trying to mount female dogs that are much bigger and older. Male dogs would make sexual advances to other male dogs.

Puppies would be seen humping and mounting the litter mates. Male dogs appear to be oversexed as if they cannot mount other dogs, they will try to mount other animals. A pet owner will surely be embarrassed if the pet humps the legs of other people. However, these are normal sexual actions of dogs. The early interest in sex, the mounting and the humping are instinctive reactions that prepare the dog for future procreation.

Dog owner may opt to breed or not to breed the pet. Breeders would naturally breed the dog for monetary reasons. The prospect of holding cute puppies that look and behave lot like the pet would be reason enough for an owner to breed the pet. A dog owner would want to perpetuate the genes of a winner thus the dog will be bred . While some owners will specifically want to breed the pet, others would make sure that breeding is prevented especially if the dog will contribute to the number of homeless dogs that need to be put to sleep. Responsible dog owners would neuter the pet so as not to add to the number of homeless dogs. With all these reasons it would be necessary for a dog owner to know at what age the dog can be bred.

Attainment of sexual maturity is largely influenced by the size as well as the breed of the dog. Not all dogs would attain puberty at the same age. Dogs commonly reach puberty from 6 to 12 months of age.

Smaller breeds attain sexual maturity at a much younger age . A six months old small breeds would show sexual advances but large breeds have to be about a year old before they get sexually active. Unlike small breeds that are ready to mate at six months of age, large breed of dogs would be interested in mating only when it is about a year old. Dogs must not be allowed to mate before the first birthday when the sperms are already fully developed.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation for dogs

By Jerry Welsh

CPR can save your dog's life! Dog owners are encouraged by the American Red Cross and other animal health organizations to learn how to give the pet CPR. For families with pets, at least one member has to know how CPR is done. CPR means cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This chest compression and rescue breathing is aimed to resuscitate the pet that have had cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmunary procedure is an emergency care that will stabilize the pet's condition after cardiac arrest.

Electrocution and ingestion of poisonous substances, ingestion of foreign object that can create an airway blockage can snuff the life of the pet. Prevention will naturally be the best bet to save the pet from these life threatening conditions. However, we know that accidents can never be prevented given the energetic and inquisitive nature of the pet. Learning first aid methods will be a dog owner's insurance against serious injuries that can cause the death of the pet. Competency of the owner to administer CPR can stabilize the condition before the pet is transported to a veterinary facility. The skill of the pet owner to administer this first aid method can save the life of the pet and can give the pet owner the chance to enjoy the companionship of the pet for many more days. To be able to save the life of the pet with CPR, an owner has to learn how to give artificial respiration and chest compression competently. CPR can be administered by following the ABC process.

A is for the dog's airway. The first step is to check if the dog's airway is not blocked. Artificial respiration will be ineffective if the dog's airway is blocked. To check the airway, the dog's head must be extended, the mouth opened to be able to see if an object is creating a blockage. If manual removal of the blockage is not possible, Heimlich maneuver must be done on the pet.

Rescue breathing is the next step but it can only be done if the airway is clear. Lay the pet on his side, hold the snout close with one hand and blow over the dog's nose. Blow over the dog's nose once every three seconds until the dog is already breathing without help. Breathing must be at full lung capacity to revive large dogs. Artificial respiration for small dogs must be gentler. Breathing is aimed to move the chest and not to inflate the lungs.

Chest compression is done to a dog that has lost consciousness and to one that has no pulse nor heartbeat. The palm of the hand must be positioned over the dog's heart. With the other hand placed on top of the other start compression. Compress the chest 3 times every two seconds. It would be necessary to breathe on the nose after doing five chest compressions

What must be done to help a dog with fever

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs like their human friends get fever too. Fever or the change in the body's normal temperature is an indication that something is amiss in the dog's system. Fever occurs when the normal temperature is increased by the body in response to a bacterial or viral infection. The set point of normal body temperature for humans is 98F while a dog's normal body temperature is between 100F to 102F. The dogs inability to speak and the rather elevated temperature of dogs makes it harder for pet owners to know if the pet has a fever.

How can you tell if the dog has fever? Bright eyes and lively alert expression are telltale signs of a healthy dog. We know how energetic dogs are but a sick pet would be lethargic. Instead of playing, the dog would prefer to lie down all day. Dogs are food motivated but a fevered pet will have no interest in food. Change in behavior will be noticed in dogs with fever.

Dogs are affectionate pets and the indifference to the family's attention is a glaring sign that something is wrong with the pet. Dogs with fever will have warmer nose, ears and fur. With a rectal thermometer, the temperature of the dog can be correctly determined. It would be best to use rectal thermometer as it would yield quick results.

There are many reasons why a dog would have a fever. Dog fever troubles can happen if the pet is left outdoors when the weather is very hot. Fever though is commonly caused by infection. Dogs are food motivated but they will turn away from food if they are sick. Pet owner must encourage the dog to eat to prevent dehydration. If the sick dog would not get up to drink, you can use a needleless syringe to squirt water into the mouth of the pet.

Fever that results from infection is usually gone after a day or two even without any treatment. But if the dog shows no infected cuts, canine fever is associated with cancer, autoimmune diseases and organ diseases. Fever that just happened - with no obvious reason would be the hardest to treat. Cases such as these must have the expert attention of a vet. A thorough physical exam and a battery of diagnostic test will be necessary as without a definitive diagnosis, the appropriate treatment cannot be administered.

Ensure that the accommodation cages do not smell of urine. You can have your dog go with you. If you notice that they are disturbed, then you should ask yourself why.

When you spot a clinic that will suit your needs, you can discuss the costs and payment plans that they accept. The rates should be affordable and they should accept credit cards.
