Bark Collars and what you should know

By Colin Seal

The bark collar is one of the modern dog obedience training devices that you need to understand utterly.

Many people think that anti-barking devices will prevent the dogs from yapping forever. You are absolutely wrong. This is most unlikely irrespective of how effective the bark collar is. Anyway you cannot stop dogs from barking. What dog lovers desire is merely to hinder them from barking too much and annoying our sleep as well as that of the neighbours. It isn't only the method of communications between dogs. It's also the way of dogs to talk to their human gurus. By barking, the dog tells the owner of the house that danger is prowling. So, barking is also constructive to a point.

Use the Collar Properly

There are to-do things that dog owners must know about the dog collar.

Use the device with restraint.

This is relevant particularly for dogs that aren't really that sneaky or whose barking is still manageable to some extent. All that these animals need is a minor change or slight static heartbeat from the electronic collar. Clever dogs may understand that the act of punishment comes from you so you want to move it away from you. It has got to be able to link the insignificant caution to the collar or the fence and not to the trainer.

You should check the directions. Read these scrupulously and understand what it means. It is certainly convenient to use perhaps even without the book. Yet, there is not a lot wrong in following the instructions prior to utilising the device. This may help in causing agitation to your dog.

On the other hand, there are a few things to avoid about the collar.

Use shock devices together with the invisible fence

The invisible fence itself is a shock device so when you use the collar, it also creates a shock to your dog. This can only confuse your pet so that the best alternative then is usually to use citronella or ultrasonic gadgets. Adjust the device to full force instantly

Most anti-barking instruments have settings you can make a selection from. Adjusting it to full strength can lead to unnecessary punishment of your dog straight away. You wouldn't desire your dog to be scared of barking after all. What we want to achieve is get rid of the aggravation and excessive barking. It is important to appraise the situation so that you can decide the best solution to this difficulty. Then, you can carry on with any appropriate training routine and use the most highly efficient anti-barking tool in the market.

By David Hamilton

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is to be sure to never discipline your dog for bad behavior when he is ill. This will only confuse your dog and might cause him to not respond to discipline in the future. Examples of this would be, if your dog vomits or defecates in a manner that is not typical to his normal behavior.

A good dog training tip is to have your dogs meet at a park if you plan on bringing a new dog into your home. By having the dogs meet at the park, the dogs will be more friendly with each other, and it'll take dominance out of the equation.

When training your dog, it is important to always be consistent. Being consistent applies to the words you use for the commands you are looking for the dog to obey, to the tone you use with the words, and to the rewards you are providing for the dog if they successfully complete the command you are teaching them.

Do not forget to praise your dogs for the good things they do. Humans can be a bit harsh when they are not happy with a dog's behavior, while being far less demonstrative when their dog does good things. Your dog needs you to be very generous with praise so they can easily understand what you want. Be generous with praise to show him how much you value good behavior.

The top mistake any dog owner can make during training is giving up. Giving up too quickly and too easily means that you've given up on your dog's abilities. Your dog needs time, patience, and consistency to grow. Continue working on behaviors in small doses. Your pooch is eager to please, so let him work alongside you.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to ensure that you make it absolutely clear to your dog what it is that your are disciplining it for. This is important to avoid confusion and to teach the dog what is desired and what is undesired behavior. An example of what to avoid is hitting your dog hours past and in a different room from where it shredded your couch.

First Aid for a dog with heat burns

By Jerry Welsh

Just like humans, dogs can get injured in accidents. But while humans would cry because of the pain, dogs would nurse their injuries silently . Getting the pet to a vet is not the only responsibility of a dog owner. A dog owner has to notice anything unusual in the behavior or in the appearance of the pet as oftentimes, the change is caused by a health concern.

Dogs normally stay away from open fires thus heat burns are not common injuries of dogs. However, dogs are often injured because they are very active and curious animals. Burned skin can be the result of the dog's attempt to filch food from the cook top. Owners using hairdryer to groom the dog must be careful as a resistant dog can get burned by the hot nozzle of the dryer. Stepping on hot coals or walking on very hot pavement can result to burns in the dog's paws.

Because of the fur, the dog's injuries as well as the extent of the damage may not be easily apparent to a dog owner. Skin that was superficially burned will redden and swell. Reddening and swelling of the skin as well as the formation of blisters are the symptoms of partial thickness burns or second degree burn. The two classifications of heat burns would have the dog in pain. Full thickness burn is not unlike third degree burn in humans where the skin peels off and cause the tissues under the skin to swell. Unlike the other two types of burns where the dog will suffer pain, deep burn is characterized by the absence of pain due to the destruction of the nerves. Deeply burned skin will turn either white or black and because of destroyed hair follicles, the hair can be easily pulled out.

Superficial burns can be treated at home with first aid treatment but a seriously burned dog has to have professional medical care. A dog with deep heat burns would need to be hospitalized especially if more than 15% of the skin was burned. Nevertheless, first aid treatment would still be necessary to stabilize the condition before the pet is transported to the hospital.

Cooling the affected area is the first aid treatment for heat burn. To arrest the damage cause by the heat to the tissues, burned body part has to be immersed in cool water. Another first aid alternative is to use a wash cloth soaked in cool water on the burned area. Dry the burned area carefully taking care not to rub the skin. Butter, grease or any ointment must not be applied on the burned skin as it will trap the heat and cause further damage.

First Aid Care for dogs with insect bites

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs bite! Despite domestication and despite being dubbed as man's best friends, some people are still intimidated by dogs because these animals are capable attacking people with their sharp teeth and strong jaws. The threat of rabies was eliminated with ongoing vaccination programs but dogs are still feared because the injuries that can be caused by their bites. Isn't it quite laughable that the "mighty" dog can be affected by the bite of a tiny insect?

Insect bites are particularly common during the summer months. Puppies are most susceptible to insect bites because their energetic and inquisitive nature makes them follow flying insects around. The sting of bees and wasps, of spiders and scorpions can cause the dog immense pain at the site of the bite.

Insect bites would have no effects on some dogs. Aside from the tingling sensation on the bite site, the dog will not be affected at all. Other dogs though would be severely affected and would manifest symptoms 20 minutes after the insect bite. Swelling of the eyes, ear flaps and lips are signs that the dog is allergic to insect bites. In some dogs, insect bites would have an even more dangerous effects. A dog stung by an insect can break out in hives and the whole face could swell. An allergic reaction that causes the face's swelling to extend to the throat is an extremely dangerous condition as the dog will suffer from breathing difficulties because of blocked airway. Unable to breathe, the dog will have an abnormal heartbeat and can even go into shock.

A dog that goes into shock because of an insect bite must be taken to a veterinary facility at once. A dog owner can easily alleviate the pain and other mild reactions associated with the insect bites with the application of first aid treatments. As long as the dog was not stung in the throat or the insect bite has not resulted to the swelling of the throat that will make breathing difficult, some first aid methods can be applied to lessen the pain resulting from the insect bite.

If the dog was stung by a bee or a wasp, the stinger can be removed with tweezers and the bite area washed with saline solution. Warm compress or a paste made from water and baking soda applied in the sting area will ease the pain as the toxin is drawn out and the swelling reduced. Dogs are susceptible to allergic reactions thus it is the responsibility of the dog owner to have Benadry or other antihistamines in the first aid kit to be able to administer emergency care to the pet. The pet's allergic reactions to insect bites can be alleviated with antihistamines.

Dog First Aid - Abscess

By Jerry Welsh

Abscess is not uncommon in dogs. A dog with abscess would not want to move because the swollen affected area would be very painful. Because abscess causes the dog immense pain, it would be very beneficial to the pet if the owner knows how to administer first aid treatments for abscess.

Puncture wounds from dog bites, scratches and bruises are injuries that usually develop into abscess. Skin injuries are often the outcome of the dog's skirmish with other dogs and with other animals. Painful and inflamed lump can form on any part of the dog's body. The swollen pus filled sac develops when a wound heals very fast so that dirt and germs are trapped beneath the skin. Bacteria can multiply easily on the nutrient rich subcutaneous layer of the skin. The swollen sac will develop because of the presence of bacteria.

Once infection is detected the immune system will try to get rid of the foreign materials by dilating the blood vessels to increase the blood supply to the affected area so that more white blood cells can fight the infectious agents. However, the concentration of the white blood cells in the affected area would cause the hardening of the swollen sac when the white blood cells die. The sac will contain pus and a smelly brown liquid that may be tinged with blood. The swelling will be hot and tender to the touch. An abscess would be painful thus the dog will be reluctant to its normal activities. The dog may have no interest in food as well.

Some types of abscess would heal even without treatment. However, treatment would be necessary not only because of the pain the condition causes the pet. Left untreated the abscess can seriously affect the tissues around the affected area and cause internal toxicity. It would be a good thing if the abscess ruptures spontaneously. Pus, brown smelly discharge and blood would drain from the opening of the abscess. The fur around the swollen lump will be caked by the oozing pus and smelly discharge. The fur around the abscess must be clipped. The contents of the abscess must be drained fully.

Ten to fifteen minutes application of warm compress will cause the abscess to rupture. A hot wash cloth will increase blood flow to the infected area. This process must be repeated until the abscess comes to a head. Carefully squeeze the lump to allow the core to be expulsed completely. Allow the pus and the discharge to drain completely. Hydrogen peroxide must be used to flush out the opening. Apply antiseptic to the wound generously. The pus and the smelly discharge must be totally drained thus the abscess must not be bandaged.

Emergency Care for an impaled dog

By Jerry Welsh

Impalement injuries are not as common as nicks and cuts, fractures or ingestion of foreign objects. Dogs though can sustain impalement injuries because these are very active and playful animals. Due to the inquisitive nature that puts them in tight spots, dogs are always injured. The conditions arising from the pet's ingestion of poisonous substances or foreign objects that caused a blockage in the airways would make an owner consider the true condition of the pet before treatment can be administered. An impalement injury will be easily noticed so that the dog owner will not wonder what accident happened to the pet.

Falling from heights is one of the most common cause of impalement injuries as the dog can be speared by a tree branch or a fence. A dog running with a stick in the mouth can be impaled as well if the end of the stick is shoved into the ground. Dogs have the inclination to roam and one that has trespassed and destroyed other people's property can be meet a sad fate from the arrow of an irate person.

An impalement injury can be serious enough to be the cause of the dog's death. Dogs are hardy animals and some minor impalement injuries would not really have serious effects on the pet. Serious or non-serious, an impalement injury would need a vet's attention. A dog owner may not think of bringing the pet to a vet if the small stick that has impaled the dog on the chest was removed. However, the condition of the dog may be more serious than it appears to be. The stick may have caused severe damage to an internal organ. Internal bleeding is another possible outcome of an impalement injury.

Professional medical attention must be given to the dog but before transporting the pet to a medical facility, first aid treatments must be administered to save the pet from a lot of pain.

Dogs in pain can turn aggressive and an impalement injury would certainly cause the dog immense pain. Muzzle the injured dog before administering first aid treatment. The foreign body that was stuck into the dog must not be removed. The owner has to calm the dog so that movement of the dog and the foreign object will be minimized. Moving the foreign object stuck into the dog could cause more internal damage. However, if the life of the pet is in grave danger as when it was impaled on the steel bar of a fence, there will be no other choice but to separate the pet from the stationary object. Once the pet was removed from the stationary object, first aid measures to control the bleeding must be administered while the pet is being transported to the hospital.
