Can Anyone Use A Coyote Trap Legally

By Janet Gaye Walker

Coyotes exist around us, whether we live on a farm or in a large metropolis. Although they used to just live in forest and secluded areas, they have migrated to human inhabited areas, such as small or large cities, thus creating a hazard for people. Nobody is ready to meet a coyote one-on-one, so it is important to know how to protect yourself in such an event.

The first thing you should do is to purchase or create your own coyote traps. If you are in an area prone to coyotes, then you know where they are at night. Placing a coyote trap, as you would with a bear trap, will most likely decrease their population. But first, you have to make sure you understand the legislation in your city. If you are not allowed to hunt coyotes, then you should not lay coyote traps.

You should also be careful not to place any coyote traps on human beaten paths, to avoid hurting innocent people. But if you're really set on hunting coyotes, this is how to do it.
There are different methods of trapping a coyote, such as using snares, a land trap, a cage or by shooting it. Assuming you don't have a gun license, I would recommend the former. By using a cage, you are ensuring people do not get hurt senselessly by accident.

Coyotes can be caught by using traps, snares and cages but shooting one would be your last resort. Since most people do not have a gun license, using a cage would be your best bet. coyote trap rarely cause any accidents, especially with people. A coyote usually beats the same path as a way of keeping track of any signs of danger, making it very easy for you to place a cage with food in their way. At the same time, make sure your visit there is unknown to the coyote. Otherwise, you will decrease your chance of catching one since they will be more alert. You can also use rabbit traps to catch a rabbit for bait.

Hopefully your cage closes itself once a coyote walks in but if it doesn't, make sure you carefully trap them inside. Once the coyote has been caught, please call your local animal control authority to take the coyote to a safer place, you do not want to take the law into your own hands.
