Diet Guidelines For Cats

By Mark Walters

Cats are generally pretty self-sufficient creatures - as long as you feed them and give them fuss from time to time, they're fine. But what should you be feeding them to keep them strong and healthy? Well, firstly it's important that you give them good quality food as often cheap food contains harmful toxins that can make them ill. This was highlighted during a recent scandal when cheap Chinese cat food was found to be full of chemicals that were harmful to cats.

Many people feed their cats dry food, but wet food tends to have much more nutritional content so it's a good idea to give them wet food wherever possible. You could, for example, give them different meat that's in season, such as rabbit or poultry such as pheasant. Most cats are fairly happy with chicken, lamb or beef, though, so you don't need to worry too much. A lot of it depends on how fussy your cat is as some likely to have more variety than others.

Lions, tigers, panthers and all the other cats that exist in the wild often eat lots of raw meat on a regular basis. Raw meat can be a great way to keep your cat strong and healthy as it offers a really good source of protein. Domesticated cats sometimes have more problems with digestion though, so it's important that you make sure the meat is cut into small chunks wherever possible and that it's in season. Also check to make sure all the meat you give them is good quality.

If you can't afford lots of good quality raw meat to keep your cat healthy, then don't worry. The vast majority of commercial cat food brands offer tasty, nutritionally balanced alternatives that will be very good for your cat. The manufacturers have spent millions of dollars researching exactly what nutrients cats need and have put all of that science into creating the best food they possibly can, so as long as you don't buy the cheap varieties, commercial food is fine.

Lastly, it's really important that you make sure to give your cat food served in clean bowls. This will help prevent the spread of infection, which will keep your cat in great shape. You should also make sure your cat always has access to lots of fresh, clean water. This will help them with their digestion process and it's especially important to give them water if you feed them any dry food, which takes more effort to digest. Water also helps to keep their coats shiny and healthy.
