For Dog Walking San Francisco Is A Great City

By Nell Soto

It's a city with hills, beaches, parks, marinas, and miles of sidewalks. For dog walking San Francisco is one of the best places around.

The routes you can take are seemingly limitless. Depending on how far you feel like going, you can set your sights on getting to the Pacific Ocean by walking the three miles from one end of Golden Gate Park to the other. If you have any energy left, keep on walking along the beach, running from the waves as they break along the shore. Or combine your walk with one of the most breathtaking sight seeing paths in the world by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. It's about a mile from one end to the other.

The City has rules about keeping your dog on a leash. It's a fair rule intended to protect your dog and others. But it's also understood that dogs need to have space to run free, so the Recreation and Parks Department designated nineteen dog play areas where leashes can be taken off. You can find maps for these areas in a publication called 'Exercising Your Dog in San Francisco's Parks.'

One of the best places to see dogs running free is at The Marina. It's a usually windy spot, perfect for kite flying and frisbee throwing. If you've got a dog that likes to play fetch, take him or her there.

If you have a dog small enough to fit comfortably in your purse, you may venture toward one of the nicer shopping districts like Union Square if you feel like getting a little retail therapy with your exercise. A small dog discreetly tucked away in your handbag should be able to accompany you in the shops without problem. If you have a bigger canine companion, and no one walking with you to keep it company, you might be happy to do a bit of window shopping.

It's always important, and obligatory, to clean up after your dog. If you don't, you can be cited. It's the law. But it's also a matter of common decency. And the rule is enforced no matter if you're in a park, on a city street, or hiking through a forest. And if you forget to bring a bag or scooper along with you, don't worry. The City conveniently provides bags and disposal bins all over town.

If you live there and enjoy dog walking San Francisco has so much to offer. If you're planning to visit, think about bringing your dog along for the holiday. You'll have a lot to explore there together.
