Should I use a No bark Collar on my Dog

By Bren Pappillion

Tempers can get a little hot on the subject of no bark collars for dogs. The issue of using negative reinforces like bark collars is a hot button for many people. It reminds me a little bit of the argument to spank or not spank your kids. Dogs, however, are not children and we have to remember that when making decisions regarding their care.

Some dogs are more stubborn than others just like kids. Dogs really are mans best friend in many ways. I would much rather use positive reinforcement when possible and have a happy excited to train dog. This isn't always possible.

I would certainly use all possible alternatives before using a no bark collar. Dogs are pack creatures and really want to please their pack leader. You can capitalize on this trait and possibly stop nuisance barking by doing so.

You can try squirting your dog in the face with water. Throwing a can of pennies close to him when he barks to distract him sometimes works also. These interventionsvary in effectiveness depending on the dog and your commitment to being consistent.

Just remember size is no predictor of stubborness! Don't buy a little dog thinking he will be quieter because of his size. Small dogs can be very stubborn and big dogs can be mellow.

Put aside the problems with the neighbors if you have any, the sheer sleep deprivation issue a barking dog can cause can drive you to drink! A very nervous, sensitive dog could be traumatized by a no bark collar. You have to know your dogs nature.

In my own personal experience Oscar does a lot better if he gets some vigorous exercise each day? This unfortunately means I have to get some too! Luckily for me Oscar is small and can be ran in the house chasing his rubber ball on days it is just impossible to get him out for a run. Dogs have to have exercise. So if you're not exercising your pet nothing you do may stop his barking including a bark collar.

The no bark collar I use for Oscar decreases his barking greatly but by no means eliminates it. To be effective you must use the collar intermittently and be sure you dog get plenty of exercise. I'm thinking of buying Oscar a treadmill!!
