Giving a gift has a built in hazard. There's usually a waiting period before you learn if the gift was liked. There is more pressure when the recipient is no other then the president of the US. With her gift tucked modestly into a plastic bag, this Mount Airy resident had to sign a visitor's log in Room 45 of the Old Washington DC The bag, which contained the portrait of the president's horse, Little Man, was delivered by a guard.
Coming from Old National Pike where she lives with her family, this artist is best known for her animal portraits. The business came about after learning about art and taking portrait lesson and merging the two things that she loves animals and portraiture. Successfully her money making business is doing really well currently.
Using the photographs of the animals as her base, she uses pastels to them transform them into portraits. Her horse portraits are copies of show photos sometimes. No matter what animal she works with be it horses, cats, dogs, a goat, parakeets and guinea pigs she falls in love with each one. The next challenge that she wants to try out is creating portraits of fishes and turtles using oil paints. The way she paints the animals is by making them look younger or eliminating any defects like eye disease.
She had thought about painting Little Man for a while now so she then wrote the president's wife and asked her for photos she could follow. After a few weeks she was able to receive a package from the Special Assistant to the President and Director of Correspondence along with pictures of the president and the horse. With the mailed photos, her normal process was somehow disrupted. There are some things that pictures miss capturing hence it was her way that she would visit the animal to get to know them better.
Even though the project was still being worked on, she received news of Little Ma's death. For her, she just wants the portrait to mean something to the president now. Wanting to finish her work, she then divided it into four stages. To begin with she created a drawing using pastel which was how she marked all the dark, medium and light shadow tones. Following this, she added in some color blending it in with her fingers.
Next, a bland background was put in, which was light blue for Little Man. Lastly, it was important to make it look real. It was important for the artist to add details that made the image seem authentic.
Drawing Little Man was a labor of love for her. Since she is a horse lover, she even has one which is stabled in Poolesville. Apart from that she also has a cat, a dog and a goat. She takes pride in the portrait that she has created for the president and is glad she did it.
