The Top Ten Poisons for Cats

By Robert Baker

Did you realize that over 100,000 animal poisoning incidents were reported in 2009? As much as we try to protect our pets there are so many obstacles that we must identify to keep them safe. Your cats safety is obviously of utmost importance and this is why we must keep an eye out for things that might not be poisonous to us, but poisonous to them.

While this list has some toxins listed it is far from complete. Spend time researching what you can do to make your home safe for your fuzzball.

1. Medications that we take like Ibuprophen and naproxen are toxic. So are acetaminophen and antidepressants.

If you have a flea or tick issue call your vet. Over the counter treatments are sometimes only made for dogs and can make kitty very ill.

3. Human food can be deadly. This is not a complete list: Garlic Chives Onions Chocolate Caffeine Coffee Tea

Rat and Mouse poison

Household plants are quite toxic to cats so it is imperative that you double check what is in your home: Lilies Daffoldils Tulips Azaleas Sago palms Many cacti and succulents

6. Pet medications- be sure to follow your vets directions on the use of pet medications. DO NOT use over the counter dewormers. These can be deadly to your pet and very painful.

7. Household cleaners- bleach is one of the harshest chemicals leading to devastating effects on cats health 8. Chemicals- paint thinner and antifreeze make the top of the "worst list" 9. Heavy metals- paint, linoleum and batteries all contact lead which is toxic 10. Fertilizers- do not let your cat lay on a fertilized lawn and then groom themselves. This is an easy way to poisoning.

Be sure to have the phone number for your vet and poison control handy. Your cat is counting on you to make it's environment safe.
