Well-Trained Dogs - What More do They Need?

By Stan Beck

Even well-trained adult dogs need a few important things to make them well-rounded as pets. Food, shelter and the provision of its basic survival needs as well as the dog treats and attention you give it for performing a good job are not the only things that your dog needs to make it as happy as it can be. As a concerned owner, you need to provide your pet with sufficient physical and mental exercise to keep it active. Socialization and interaction with other dogs is another thing that you should provide your pet with in order to make it happy.

Mental Needs of Your Adult Dog

The adage that says "you can't teach old dogs new tricks" is not at all true as far as the dogs' capability to learn is concerned; for old, well-trained dogs can still become smarter as they age, notwithstanding their breed and characteristics. The more skills that a dog learns makes it feel more useful not just as a pet but a friend, companion and helper as well.

A way to improve your dog's mental alertness as it reaches adulthood is to teach it new skills that involve focus and attention every now and then. You can also expand your pet's small world by taking it out on walks on different places.

Try to introduce your dog to something new each week to exercise it physically and mentally. A dog that has a lot of confidence will develop confidence that most well-trained dogs possess. Also try to stimulate your dog mentally more frequently. Your pet will enjoy it and it will surely age happily.

Intelligent or active dogs need to be taught more skills to prevent them from getting bored. These dogs also need to have something to do. This is one way of preventing them from developing negative behaviors as a result of boredom.

Aside from intelligent and active dogs which need physical and mental stimulation, the working breeds need a lot of work to do to keep them at work, free from boredom that prompts them to do undesirable acts. Typical examples of working dogs are Collies, Great Danes, Rottweilers, Sheepdogs and German Shepherds. These dogs are bred for work and they need to have something to do to put their energy to use.

As boredom is the greatest factor that can lead your pet to develop negative behavior, you need to involve it in certain physical and mental exercises that will keep it focused. Boredom can cause dissatisfaction in dogs and once your pet becomes dissatisfied, it will look for something else to do, most probably one that you will not like.

Consistency has always been the most effective way to maintain your dog's physical and mental alertness. Your pet needs to practice regularly on its skills in order to make it active and having a sense of purpose. Your failure to let your dog regularly practice the skills it has acquired or learned will make it lose what it had learned, and your pet's smartness is gone.
