So Many Choices

By Robert Baker

So, you have decided to embark on a new journey. That journey of your first cat or perhaps getting your current "fur buddy" a friend. Congratulations!

You have researched the various breeds, considered what type of cat personality will fit your's or both you and your current companion. For many people here comes the second most challenging task. What do I name this new addition, so many choices! Typically, this is where confusion sets in.

Many people will choose a name that resembles the cat's appearance. "Graymond" for a blue/gray Russian Blue or "Blackie" for that solid black cat. By visiting your friends who have cats, by now you get the picture. However, this is not you! Like the rest of your life, you want the name to be unique, different. This is actually easier than you think. Here are a few ideas.

First, what breed are you adopting from the local no-kill animal rescue/adoption center? Bengal, Tabby, Persian, or just a mix? Perhaps you live in a part of the country which is surrounded by Native American Tribes or a unique landmark. Starting with these two thoughts, your next visit should be to "Google" those ideas. If, Native American history/culture is of your interest, "Google" say, Hopi names. There are several sites to select from and then decide if you are adopting a male or female. Scroll through the list and look at their meanings. If you know the cat's personality all the better. Another idea is if you have a favorite type of art, whether it is baskets or pottery. "Google" those as well and they usually are tied to a meaning or part of the world. Of course, you could always go for a name that represents a specific holiday, such as "Boo" for that orange tabby!

See, that was easier than you thought! Thanks to the internet, there are many resources for selecting a name that is unique, meaningful and fitting for your new "forever" companion. Enjoy and your friends will certainly ask, "What does it mean?" A conversation piece while they admire your fur friend.
