Are You Ready For Your New Kitten?

By Beth Swanson

Bringing home a new kitten will call to mind the time when an infant is first brought home. The kittens actually need only a few basic things. A kitten's need has also some similarities with that of the baby: ready food, shelter and love.

Food is the first thing that you need to consider, and one way of quickly adjusting your kitten to his new home is to feed it. After you have determined the food liked by the kitten, store ample stock that will last for at least a few days so the kitten will have food regularly. While he is settling down in his new environment, a kitten will be a bit selective in his choice of food, so you can help him assimilate quicker by giving food that he is familiar with. When kitty eats the food that you offer him, it is an indication that he has overcome his initial trepidation in a strange place. If the kitten is nervous, he will be reluctant to eat because he is more concerned with the new surroundings.

Apart from the actual food, kitty should also have his own tableware! A dish for his food, another for water/milk and something for chopping his food up with is usually the minimum. One thing you should notice is that a can of cat food will be good for several servings, so store the unconsumed food in the refrigerator with a plastic cover to avoid contaminating other food.

Your kitten should be able to find his own sleeping place. As soon as he is confident enough, he will go prowling around, find a place where he can comfortably sleep and appropriate it for his own. For a physical bed, there are many types you can buy from beautiful wicker baskets of various sizes to beanbags and quilt type igloos, but a cat is a very independent animal with opinions about all things and so when first bringing your tiny kitty home you could consider just having a large box that it can't escape out of without help, and placing a blanket that has his mother's scent on it inside the box.

The last thing your kitty needs is plenty of love! Make an effort to be physically close with the kitty, he will appreciate it and feel secure if you cuddle him often. That will be the time when you can go to the next stages of home-training for your cat, e.g., his "potty" training. A kitten has very little needs so it will not make much demand on your time and finances, and a little foresight will ease the way for his coming home. A kitten is a very independent animal but will easily fit in any home provided it is given food, shelter and love.
