Choosing the Best Cat Litter Boxes

By Simon Alves

Your cat should be a consideration you think about when you are picking a litter box, the cat has to like it too. If you get the wrong size or features that scare your cat you'll be in for a rough transition. You may want to look for a box that allows for odor elimination or one that cleans itself in order to make your life easier. We'll be looking at a few different types of cat litter boxes in this article to help you get a better idea of which might suit you and your cat best.

While there are many fancy and costly cat litter boxes on the market today, at the other end of the spectrum are disposable litter boxes. This option is perfect for those who don't want to mess with cleaning out a litter box or paying for self cleaning units. With disposable litter boxes, however, you do have the expense of having to keep buying more of them.

You can of course use a regular cardboard box as a litter box for an inexpensive, down to earth option. Some have found that storage containers are a good option since they tend to be large and made of a sturdy cardboard. Just cut an opening in the front of the box and voila, a litter box is born. If you're looking for a low cost litter box, this is hard to beat, though if you want something fancier or with special features like odor control or automatic cleaning, you'll have to look further. A self made litter box is just as good as a simple pan litter box and costs less too.

The bottom part has a raised back that helps prevent the litter from scattering. If you want a box that controls odor but don't want to pay for a self cleaning model, the Petmate Kitty Komplete line, which only costs about $30, is a good option. You will need to shop around to find the best litter box for your cats and home. Factors to consider include price, convenience, and odor control.
