How to Train Your Dog to Stop Jumping up on People

By Dirk Gruenberg

No matter how much we love our dogs, sometimes they do drive us crazy with their behavioral issues such as barking and chewing things, don't they?

Now, barking and chewing on things is inconvenient and annoying but it is not dangerous: However, aggressiveness, biting, and jumping u on people can be. We might not mind our dg jumping on us, but depending on his size, his umping behavior might be a real problem for other people.

Look at it this way: You might be fine with being jumped up on, but what if your dog displayed that same behavior with children are elderly people. They might really get hurt.

Of course, as you have probably guessed, there are several reasons for dogs' desire to jump up on people. Two quite simple ones are the following: You come home and your dog just could not wait for that to happen, he is excited, so he greets you that way. Or he simply wants attention.

Or here is another reason: You might have positively reinforced his behavior to do so over time without ever really being aware of it. This, actually, is the most common cause. But whatever the reason is for your dog, it is up to you to correct him and let him know what you want or do not want.

The following are proven successful methods and tips on how to stop your dog from jumping at people.

Imagine your dog launching himself at you. Before he does so, you will most likely know. When he does, just turn away. He might miss, but that would be okay. That way, at least, he would not consider his effort a success. Then just ignore him, because giving him attention would be like a reward, too.

If you do this repeatedly, he will understand that there is nothing to gain from jumping on you. No attention, no reward, nothing. Finally, when he greets you without jumping on him, praise him and give him a reward and attention then.

If you do not like the idea of ignoring your dog, here is another option: When you notice that he is about to launch himself in your direction (or any direction really), just give him a command like "sit" or "down". This will give him something else to do, and the thought of jumping will be forgotten.
