How to Name My Puppy

By Dirk Gruenberg

You are excited because you are getting a puppy? You just can't wait and are thinking about all the preparations you need to make before you can welcome him to your family? You will need to buy toys and all kinds of other equipment.

When all that is taken care of, only one more thing will be missing: Choosing his name. This step should not be taken lightly as he will hear his name literally tens of thousands of times during his life.

So, naturally, you want choose a name that you enjoy saying and that does not get you in trouble somehow. So let's go, here is some advice on how to choose a name. First, try to find a name that suits your puppy.

Of course, sometimes dog owners have made their minds u about the puppy's name before meeting the puppy, but I recommend first meeting the puppy and then naming him.

You can take a day or two to get to know your puppy's personality to make sure you pick a name that is perfect for them.

Moreover, it is important to avoid names that sound very similar to dog commands, because this might only end up causing confusion. Noel, for example, sounds kind of like no, say it may not be ideal.

Additionally, choosing a name that is very common is not in your dog's best interest. You want to be sure that if you are out and about in a dog park, for example, your dog will not be confused by too many people calling his name. Just make it unique.

Don't choose a name that has a derogatory meaning. Chubby might sound cute at first but it won't when you are in public. People could hear it and think you are saying it to them. That could be awkward.

Take the time to look up names or brainstorm with family members to find a name that fits into your family.
