Prevent And Recognize Signs Of Illness In Aquarium Fish

By Danielle Russell

Aquarium fish can get sick just as any other pet. The illnesses are as a result of disease. When it comes to aquarium fish, most disease is caused by stress.

Though the micro-organisms that cause illness are already in the water, the fish is usually resistant to them until it gets stressed.

What causes stress in aquarium fish

Fish are under stress from the time they are born until they find their home in an aquarium. Most new beginners don't know the techniques to properly handle fish.

Water quality can create stress in the fish. Different species require different types of water quality. Quality parameters like pH, water hardness, high nitrite and carbon dioxide level, low dissolved oxygen, salinity of water, water temperature and others.

Lice, leaches and even introducing new fish can disrupt the aquarium environment and cause stress.

Changing weather patterns can also affect the environment in the aquarium. Colder weather can cause stress in the aquatic environment.

Poor Diet as a result of lack in nutritional requirement always leads to poor performance in fish immune system. The efficiency of the fish's immunity system can dramatically drop. If this happens, the fish will become stressed.

Signs of illness you can look out for

If you monitor your fish on a regular basis, you should be able to detect signs of stress fairly easily. Signs include swimming with clamps up in their fins, hovering in a corner, heavy breathing and rubbing against objects. You should act immediately if you notice any of these warning signs.

How to reduce stress in aquarium

To reduce stress in aquarium, you need to guide against factors that lead to stress. These tips might be useful in relieving disease causing stress.

Make sure you have detail information about the fish species that you will be introducing to your tank. Enquiring about its requirements before you buy it will help you a lot. So, ask as many questions as come to your mind before you decide to purchase a certain type of fish.

Knowing the right food for your fish is another important thing you have to know as this may vary from species to species. If you have this knowledge you will be able to provide foods that are rich in nutritional ingredients that your fish require.

Keep the environment clean.
