Giving first aid to a collapsed dog

By Jerry Welsh

Seeing the dog collapse would be a traumatic experience for an owner especially if he/she believes that the pet is perfectly healthy. A dog can suddenly collapse and be unable to stand on its own feet. Collapse is a condition that occurs when the dog abruptly losses strength. A dog that collapses may not only be able to stand but also lose consciousness. Dogs would have different fainting spells, some would only last for second, some dogs would remain in the state of collapse for a while and others would need to be revived to regain consciousness. Some dogs would recover from the state of collapse as if nothing happened. Other dogs would stay disoriented and weak after collapsing.

A serious life threatening condition can be the reason why some dogs collapses repeatedly. The dog owner has to take the pet to a vet for proper diagnosis. Dog collapse can be an indication of a nervous system, respiratory or a musculoskeletal system disorder. A dog that collapses can have a congenital heart defect that have worsened and made the dog weak. The dog that collapses may not have an underlying health concern but the condition could have resulted from a blockage in the airway.

Dogs form a strong attachment with the owner thus it would be understandable for a pet parent to panic at the sight of the unconscious pet. A dog that is unable to stand or one that is unconscious would need the help of the master and to be able to give first aid the owner has to be calm. To be able to help the pet, a dog owner has to consider the possible reasons for the pet's condition. If the reason why the dog has collapsed is a blocked airway, the dog owner needs to administer first aid methods that will remove the airway blockage. A blockage that is just at the base of the dog's tongue can be easily removed. The dog owner has to learn how to do the Heimlich maneuver to be able to help the pet.

A dog that collapses must be immediately seen by a vet but the owner still has to administer first aid to stabilize the pet's condition. It would be necessary for a dog owner to check the pulse, the breathing and the temperature of the pet. The pet must be kept comfortable and covered with a blanket to maintain body temperature.

Rescue breathing is a first aid method given to a dog that has stopped breathing. Hold the dog's mouth close and breathe on the pet's nose. Forcing air to the lungs through the nose must be done 6 times per minute. Heart massage is given to a collapsed if the heartbeat is no longer heard. Position the dog on its right side and firmly compress the chest over the heart area. This procedure must be repeated 70 times per minute.
