Everything You Need To Know About Teddy Bear Puppies

By Lenore Lickteig

Teddy bear puppies are a fairly new breed of dog. They are often referred to as designer dogs, as they were bred specifically to get the cute, fuzzy teddy look. These puppies have been around since around 2000 and are so adorable that it is hard to resist them.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not yet claim these pups as a proper breed, since they have not been around for very long. Right now, they are available through special breeders, like a Yorkie Poo breeder, as well as pet shops with little dogs for sale. They are a blend of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise, a cuddly combo that creates a very teddy looking little pet. In a few more generations, it is expected that these dogs will be an official breed, recognized by the AKC.

The dogs have long, soft fur that does not fall out and end up all over the place. For this reason, many people choose this type of dog for the lack of shedding. You can either trim the fur or leave it long, whichever look you prefer.

These little dogs come in a nice range of color combinations. The breed does not have a particular color that it is known for, so there are lots of options. This makes it easier to choose just the right puppy.

With flat little faces and dark eyes hidden under the fur, these cute critters are adorable. They also have short, fluffy tails, as well as drooping ears. These attributes make them look even more like a toy. The fact that they tend to stay fairly small also makes them cute. Most of the dogs, full grown, will weigh in at somewhere between 12-14 pounds.

These pups are also hypoallergenic, thanks to the lack of shedding, so any family can have them. They do not face any major health problems associated with the breed, but they do require grooming if you leave their coat long. If their hair is not brushed regularly, it tends to mat up. You can also keep your pet trimmed to avoid this issue.

With teddy bear puppies becoming so popular, it is hard to imagine that they have only been around for a decade or so. In that short amount of time, many families have taken home their very own pet to love. With a happy, outgoing personality, the dogs make great pets for the whole family. They are quieter than many smaller dogs and even come in teacup size. All these traits make them a sought after breed.
