More About the History of Betta Fish

By James Conar

Betta fish have been around for hundreds of years. They were once very boring creatures. In fact, they didn't have beautiful colors and shapes until the people of Siam started breeding them. They would breed so many different types of Betta's with each other that the number of Betta species doubled in a very short time.

These fish are now bred to be beautiful. You will find these pets in many different colors and sizes. One thing to look for is the variety of color. Wild Beta's do not have these beautiful colors. This is because they needed to blend in with their environment so that they could hunt for food.

If you look at the size of Betta's, you will notice that they are not big at all. These small fish only get to be a few inches long. This is because their natural environment is made up of small ponds and puddles. So it shouldn't surprise you that these fish are not beautiful in the wild. They are plain and boring looking. Not like the beautiful, colorful Betta's that have become so popular with our society.

Something that you should probably know is that Beta fish live very short lives. Most of these fish will only live through three winters. However, with proper care and nutrition, you can increase their lifespan to around six years. There have been rare cases of these fish living up to eight years, but this is very unlikely.

I suggest that you find out more by researching the many different websites available online. These really are wonderful fish. The internet is full of resources that you can use to care for your pet Betta. Look for nutritional information and tank care. These are the most important things to consider.
