Keep Your Aging Dog Healthier

By Allyson Westcot

Pets can suffer because of the same sort of age effects that humans do. They can suffer with things very like human dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Just as we'd begin to get naturally forgetful in old age, your dog can start to get mixed up by once familiar things, too.

Older adults who walk frequently have been proven to have fewer memory issues and a better capability to concentrate and reason than people who live more sedentary lifestyles. Just 20 minutes a day has been show to enhance the ability to learn, concentrate and reason. We've all heard someone say things like they need to talk a walk to clear their head or think. Research shows that is not just a figure of speech.

Your pet can benefit in a rather similar way. Regular walks, at least twice a day, can help feed your pet's brain more oxygen and glucose, helping him remember more and simply think better. This regular diet of good circulation, oxygen and glucose may improve brain function and prevent things like bafflement and dementia. Some research has even shown the veins in the brain can grow in animals that begin walking frequently, making allowance for even better circulation and oxygenation.

Most studies have been done on rats and then on humans, but the University of Toronto has replicated lots of the discoveries on dogs. So when you put one of your dog harnesses and leashes on your pet and head outside, you are improving your fitness and your pet's.

Human studies have shown that inactive humans were two times as likely to develop Alzheimer's Disease than those who exercise at a good rate at least 3 times each week. People who exercised less energetically, but still at least walked a few times a week, were still less in peril than sedentary folks. So enhance your mental health while shielding your pet's mental acuity. Snap on the dog leash and get outside.
