Get The Finest Koi Fish For Sale

By Marla Swanson

Koi is the Japanese word for carp. It can also mean affection or love, so carp are Japanese symbols of love and friendship. These decorative fish often feature in Irezumi, traditional Oriental tattoo designs. Koi fish for sale can be auctioned on-line, or even purchased wholesale. High end fish will be individually pictured and priced.

The accurate name of the species brocaded carp is Nishikigoi. This is virtually always truncated to Koi, the discriminately bred showy varieties of refined common carp. Today's hobbyist maintains Koi in external ponds and water gardens to add decoration. The most recognizable grouping are Gosanke, broken up into sub-sections nominated as, Taisho Sanshoku, Kohaku, and Showa Sanshoku.

To begin with, carp were cultivated to be used as food fish in Eastern Asia. Their essential flexibility and healthiness made it possible for them to be exported overseas from original habitats in both Asia and Europe, and then reared all round the earth. Shade mutation was principally intentionally bred more than one thousand years ago in ancient China.

During the 1820s in Japan, the discriminatory breeding program took off seriously, and a number of distinctive color configurations were recognized by breeders. Tokyo's 1914 Exposition publicized these color variants to the general public, and the pastime of nurturing attractive Koi almost immediately spread. Nowadays, they are put up for sale in innumerable pet stores, with the most prized examples available via specialist dealers.

Contemporary Koi still have the toughness of their extraction, as descendants from common carp. Although Nishikigoi are a cold water genus, they do not thrive during over-extended bouts of ice-cold weather. Koi collections in an open-air pond are at the mercy of predators including cormorants, foxes, otters, herons, raccoons, cats, hedgehogs and kingfishers.

Nishikigoi are omnivorous. They enjoy a varied diet including lettuce, peas and water melon. Pellet food is designed to float, drawing the fish to the surface of the water. Koi are able to recognize the person who regularly feeds them, and will gather around their feeder at meal times, even taking food from their hands. An average lifespan is in the region of forty-seven years.

Breeders have identified and named specific categories of Koi. New varieties include the Ghost Koi, developed during the 1980s. They became hugely popular in Great Britain, largely due to their metallic scales. Dragon carp (sometimes known as longfin, or more commonly, Butterfly Koi), also became a fashionable new variation during the same decade. Butterfly Koi are bred for their flowing, elegant fins. The vast majority of the thousands of offspring produced from each spawning have no interesting colors, or are genetically defective. These tend to be used as food fish.

The asking price of Koi fish for sale fluctuates considerably according to a wide range of issues. Competition quality Koi should display symmetry of configuration, constant hue, with a high sheen. Great body confirmation, an illustrious breeder, a renowned bloodline and certification of pedigree can force prices for best grade Koi to dizzying heights. The possession of Jumbo ranked, unbeatable Koi may be comparable to the ownership of one of the works of a world-renowned sculptor or painter, and their lofty worth is an indication of this standing.
