Frogs as pets are increasing n popularity. This is part of a trend where amphibian sales are growing every year. Popular frogs include the PacMan, famous for its PacMan like look, and the Green Treefrog. Treefrogs thrive in smaller groups and are very friendly to people. Reptiles and Amphibians are only suitable for children 10 and up due to the risk of spreading salmonella. This is \avoided with good hygiene such as using an anti-bacterial soap on hands after handling.
Frogs are also well liked due to their tiny size. Most amphibians are 2 to 4 inches in length. Some species such as the Ornate Horned Frog can grow to 6 to 9 inches. Other aspects of caring for Frogs include the need to create a tropical habitat. These insectivores are nocturnal, and are excellent climbers. Owning any frog is a long-term commitment, with some species living 15 years or more.
The characteristics and behavior of pet frogs would depend on the type. By way of example, some like to bury themselves in the substrate (substance used to cover the bottom of a habitat) while some climb in trees. Most frogs need to have some place to hide. A hiding box or space helps an amphibian feel protected.
There is one problem with having frogs as pets. Caregivers need to keep handling to a minimum. They have delicate skin that delivers added breathing capacity. Handling by humans may introduce infection and restrict this critical skin function.
Another challenge is the frog food regimen. These insectivores thrive on insects like mealworms, waxworms and crickets. In addition to insects, frogs require a dietary supplement to make up for a lack of direct sunlight in capativity. Most frogs also need a calcium supplement.
Designing a vivarium as much fun as caring for the frog itself. A tropical habitat requires the use of water and land to create a place where the frog can thrive. To raise humidity levels, tanks are covered with a substrate such as moss. Plants and daily misting with water also will keep humidity levels high
Since many frogs are tropical animals, they also require higher levels of heat during the daytime. Depending on the type, daytime temperatures should range from 80F on the cool end of the tank to 85F on the heated end.. At night the temperature needs to be a few degrees lower. This is done with a ceramic heat lamp affixed to the exterior of the tank,
With all the above you are now ready to purchase a pet. Always check the appearance of any frog before purchasing. A well cared for reptile will be alert, have clear eyes, will vocalize (if applicable for that species), and will most likely be active. A frog or any amphibian can offer years of joy. Frogs in captivity can live 10 years or more.
