What To Consider Before Going For Poodles For Sale

By Stella Gay

Many historians link the origin of poodle breed of dog to Germany. That fact is true, but its development into a breed of its own kind occurred in France. The initial purpose for its development was to hunt waterfowls. That goal has changed today and it is being used for more other functions, especially ornamental ones. It is a tough and hardy dog, although its current uses make it appear not like that.

The breed resulted from interbreeding several kinds of water dogs from Hungary, Portuguese, Spain, Russia, France, and Germany. Other historians also link its ancestry to Northern Africa. Because the breed has become widely used in modern societies it is better to have an understanding about it before setting out to acquire one. This article gives some of the facts one needs to know before going for poodles for sale.

The first aspect one needs to be informed about is the size because size determines how much space it can occupy, food requirement, and general care. Sizes come in three major categories that is, toy, standard, and miniature. The breed is the same, it is only the size that varies. Males and females may vary slightly in size, but remain within a given limit for a certain category.

Toys have a weight category of between 6 and 9 pounds, miniatures between 15 to 17 pounds, whereas standards fall between 45 to 70 pounds. There is a variation in weight between the females and males in the standard-size category, with females weighing slightly lower than their male counterparts. Color of the coat also varies and buyers normally choose depending on it. Silver, apricot, brown, cream, black, gray, and white are the commonest colors. Some have a mixture of colors.

Poodles never shed their coat, something that gives them a clear advantage over other species. People who are allergic to hair find this feature very important. The hair can be manipulated through trimming, grooming, clipping, and shaving because of its wiry, curly, and dense nature. Manipulation styled into the hair is normally restricted to given styles for dogs that are used for competition shows.

Before setting out to buy a poodle, there is the issue of maintenance that one should think of first. The breed is high-maintenance and will need to be groomed every 3 to 6 weeks. Sometimes the grooming may be required more often to maintain the coat in good state. However, grooming cost should not be discouraging because an easier option of shaving the coat off also exists.

As said before, the hardy nature of poodles makes them capable of surviving in just any kind of home. That includes estates and apartments. Provided they are given plenty of human companion and regular exercise, they should cope up well. Toys and miniatures prefer the indoor company of the family. Their trainability and fast learning ability make them suitable home pets raised inside the house.

Owners should be careful not to accidentally teach bad habits to the dog because that can happen quite easily. Seeking the services of professional trainer or seeking advice on how to go about with the training is a good idea. Be warned that skipping training will lead to a badly behaved dog.
