Stuart Millheiser & Important Questions About ALS

By Jason McDonald

Even though you may have heard of ALS, it's likely that you do not know the specifics behind it. There have been many people who have helped to draw awareness to this condition, which is tremendous to say the least. However, there are different aspects related to this condition that the likes of Stuart Millheiser are aware of. To better understand this disease, with the utmost detail in place, here are a few of the most common questions you should bring up.

"What, exactly, is ALS?" In its most basic definition, ALS is a degenerative disease that affects both the brain and spinal cord. Specifically, it compromises nerves in those areas, meaning that activity that's directly related to them cannot be done as easily. In fact, in certain cases, it may be impossible for this to be carried out at all. Even though this is a relatively basic definition of the condition in question, it's a good start in the eyes of Stu Millheiser.

"What are the forms this can take?" If you want to talk about the different forms, Stuart Millheiser can tell you that there are two to cover. The first, which is known as sporadic ALS, is the most common variant. As a matter of fact, around 95% of all cases fall under this umbrella. Even though familiar ALS has a smaller percentage, it's worth noting all the same. The reason for this is that, unlike the aforementioned type, this can be passed along through generations.

"What kinds of symptoms are there?" ALS features a litany of symptoms, some more prominent than others. Keep in mind that the main warning sign is difficulty walking, given the aforementioned affliction of the spine. There's also weakness that can be seen in the hands and arms, even when it comes to the most mundane of tasks. To claim that most of the symptoms are physical, as it relates to this particular condition, probably doesn't have to be said.

Of course, with these details in mind, you may be curious to know if there are treatment options out there. While there isn't exactly a certain cure, the drug known as Rilutek can help to slow down the progression of this condition. You may also want to take up therapy, which is relaxing on the joints and able to produce results which can increase comfort. Seeing as how many patients experience pain, in certain doses, this process should not be overlooked.
