Before You Go And Visit Your Local Cavachon Breeder

By Carol Stone

Before you came to start reading this article you would probably have been across some signs or advertisements showing dogs or cavachons for sale. In fact you may have a mind to visit your local cavachon breeder to get yourself a puppy. However, before committing to this breed it may be a good idea to finish reading this article first.

The breed in question is distinctly a cross between two popular dog breeds, being the non sporting Bichon Frise and the sporting Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Thus as they are from opposite ends of the spectrum, you will get mixed results when you are trying to look for temperament. Either you will get a dog that will be playful and friendly or one that is hard headed and happy go lucky. Either way, its true personality only shows when it reaches adulthood.

Expect to pay anywhere from two hundred to five hundred dollars for this kind of dog. Expect to pay more of upwards to six hundred dollars and beyond especially if it has a champion bloodline and comes from a well established kennel and or breeder. If you want to save a few bucks you may try your luck at a local shelter.

In terms of housebreaking this breed may prove a bit difficult, being known to be one of the harder breeds to housebreak and discipline in this regard. Many owners say that the crate method works best for it, so it may pay for you to do advanced research on this method before you get frustrated with your new pet. Many articles on the crate method exist on the internet.

This dog will have slight wavy coats that are very silky and soft to the touch. It will generally come in three common colors of white, apricot, and white with tan and black markings. If the dog you get is closer to the first generation it will tend to shed much less. Also you should give it a bath at least every six weeks and make sure that you brush its fur regularly, optimally daily if possible.

Some of the health concerns you should know about with the cavachon are quite a few but manageable. It is a breed that is prone to flea allergies and also heart murmurs. Ears are prone to more infections than other breeds due to it being hairier in the inside. Thus have its ears cleaned at least once a week either by yourself, or if you have a bit more of a budget, by your vet.

A positive attribute of this dog is its size. Classified as a small dog, it can adjust well to living in smaller spaces like apartments and condominiums. It is also proven as a good companion in mobile homes and recreational vehicle living situations.

In sum this article has shown you some ideas about this breed and some basic information you can use to make a final decision if needed. However, it will not hurt to research some more so you will know if this is the breed for you or not.
