By Brenda Graham

American bulldogs are a working dog breed that are energetic, loyal, protective and confident. It has a strong will and the trainers should be able to establish his dominance in their relationship by investing time to do so. It is an excellent family dog and it could be friendly with other humans, dogs and cats if properly socialized.

Buying one in order to make it your pet requires you to make a decision after thorough thinking and proper research regarding the breed have been done. You could get information from various sources but most specially from American bulldog breeders. The following are some tips in looking for one and the proper way of raising them.

Do not purchase from puppy mills, places that puppies are bred without regard to the quality of their health and living standards. These breeds are prone to certain health conditions but proper breeding helps in lowering the chances of these conditions from showing up. Inbred dogs are most likely to inherit genetic health problems so make sure that the puppy is not a product of this.

Pet stores are also not an ideal place to purchase puppies from as well as they tend to get their supplies from puppy mills. They will deny these allegations and will tell you that they get their puppies from reputable breeders only. Ask for the name and address of the breeder to verify the truth of what they told you.

Similar to puppy mills, backyard breeders always seem to have numerous puppies available all the time with no sign of them running out. They have very minimal knowledge in breeding and prevention of the genetic problems from being inherited. They are not capable trainers and regular check up for the health conditions of the dogs is not a thing to them. Avoid breeders of this kind at all cost.

Meanwhile, hobby breeder are very careful in choosing which dog to breed and are familiar with it including all its needs. They are normally registered to organizations and they make certain that their puppies are in good health before selling them. The new owners will also be interviewed by them in order to get to know and determine the capabilities they have in raising the puppy they chose.

Your bulldog should start socializing while young so that unwanted behaviors are avoided from developing like biting. Give them the time to get acquainted with various things and avoid rushing them to do it. When introducing new people or pets, keep them leashed to avoid accidents from happening.

Start training them to obey you as early as possible and let them know and feel that you are the dominant one between the two of you. Train using voice and hands as a command and keep it consistent as not to confuse them. Using hand gestures will help the dog understand you are in a position that he cannot hear your command.

They need regular exercises as they are an athletic and energetic breed which will have favorable tempers when allowed to have its exercise. Their facial structures make it hard for them to breathe so allow them regular breaks. They are very strong so be careful during play time with them.
