These Are Facts About Old English Sheepdog

Sheepdog is a term that is generally used to refer to all breeds of dogs that are used to herd sheep. There are several breeds of dogs that fall under this category, including border collie, Hungarian Puli, Tornjak, and Shetland, Icelandic, Cumberland, Croatian, Maremma, Old English, and Polish Lowland sheepdogs among others. This article specifically talks about the Old English sheepdog.

This breed of dog has a large size with an athletic posture and a unique shaggy coat. In the past farmers used these dogs to drive their cattle around. Nowadays these dogs are used as pets as compared to their original duty in the past. They stay in comfortable homes but are occasionally used in herding, obedience, agility and conformation trials.

Naturally Old English are usually playful. It is normal to observe their puppies play with other dogs, small kids, and other pets. The adolescence stage of Old English is extended by three years due to this playful nature. The playful nature goes even beyond adolescence into adulthood. This kind of temperament is what makes it easier to raise them in homes together with other pets.

Their puppies have the ability to learn faster. In general, this is an intelligent breed of dogs that can learn a trick or skill without straining. They always try to find something to keep them busy and they are able to do different exercises both mental and physical. The exercise may include search and rescue, obedience, agility and herding.

A lot of physical and mental exercise is required to deal with their playful nature. Ensure that adults and puppies alike are exercised and walked every day. Avoid leaving them on their own and lonely. Proper development of Old English puppies is greatly dependent on human companion. It is both good and vital for them.

When given enough care and properly nurtured, a puppy can grow into a very kind adult dog. They make supper family dogs and companion to children. Although they are excellent family and companion dogs, Old English sheepdogs (OES) are not excellent at being watchdogs. They rarely bark to strangers and barely need any introduction to new people before they can start mingling with them. However, some have been known to be very protective of their family against strangers.

OES are usually most active when they are still young. If the energy they have is not channeled properly through exercise, they may become destructive. They will run around the house and chew on furniture and other items they come across in order to release energy. One must therefore find approved methods to exercise and keep them busy.

The canines have thick coats which make it necessary to ensure they are kept cool. Only exercise with them when the weather is cool and not when it is hot. Proper behavior including obedience should be instilled in them are a young age through training. Hire a licensed dog trainer to walk them through obedience training. When experienced enough then obedience training can be done by the dog owner without assistance.
