Looking For Large Dogs That Dont Drool

By Richard Green

A lot of people are reluctant to own big breeds because they worry about saliva. Many breeds are prone to excess saliva when they eat or drink and some will even wipe their face on the furniture or nearby person. Some breeds may have slobber hanging down from their lips almost constantly, but it is possible to find large dogs that dont drool.

Like humans, a dog will produce saliva when eating or expecting food. This is perfectly normal and as Pavlov noticed with his pets they would produce saliva as soon as they saw him enter a room in anticipation of a meal. Like humans the amount of saliva varies as does the ability to keep their saliva under control.

Breeds that have long jowls and short jaws are less likely to be able to hold their saliva in their mouth. Frequently it will run down the jowl and the dog might then shake its head to remove the offending slime. This can result in globs over furniture walls and nearby people. Owners of breeds like boxers normally carry a good supply of tissues or kitchen towel to combat this.

If you are the sort of person that does not want to clean slobber from walls and sofas but does like big dogs then look for a breed with a short jowl. The jowls are the long droopy lips most often associated with breeds like Boxers, Mastiffs and Great Danes. Breeds with short jowls are normally hounds or working dogs as long jowls would hamper them when hunting or herding.

There are many decent sized dogs that fall into these categories. Any of the Shepherd dogs, Afghan Hounds, Borzois, Wolfhounds and Dalmatians are just a few that have short jowls and more pointed faces. Another majestic dog the loves to work Is the Alaskan Malamute. The largest of the huskies this wolf like animal needs to be kept busy as they get bored easily.

Dalmatians are another beautiful looking dog which is easily recognizable with its white coat and black spots. The short coat is easy to groom and maintain. Saliva is rarely a problem, but they do need a lot of exercise. Originally bred as carriage dogs, they would run beside the coaches of their masters and they still have the ability to run endlessly.

Irish Wolfhounds and Afghan hounds are lovely to look at very impressive. Both of these breeds need regular grooming to maintain their coats and to prevent matting. The Saluki is another stunning breed with its sleek shape and long furry ears. They are easy to groom and very intelligent dogs. They can run incredibly fast and will need a lot of exercise.

It is worth remembering that saliva is normal and necessary and that no dog is completely saliva free. Each animal is individual and even if a breed is listed as low dribble, a defect in the mouth or over long tongue might mean that puppy will dribble more than normal. If you are totally averse to the odd wet spot on your clothes or sofa then you may be better getting a different pet.
