It is for a fact that lap dogs are getting competition from one breed of cat. The competitors are the ragdoll cats which are equally floppy and limp like rag dolls. In fact, they derive their name from this behavior of being docile, friendly, craving human companion, and enjoying being cradled. The breed was discovered in the1960s as documented in historical evidence available. Ann Baker is credited with developing the species. Ann Baker was based in California at the time of the discovery. The development was done from two cats, a male and female that were roaming freely in the streets of California without anyone to look after them.

Adding a ragdoll to other group of pets already owned is often enjoyable for cat fanatics. These cats high levels of intelligence, friendliness, and loyalty. Previous and current owners of these cats can attest to the fact that they do well with other cats, pets, and even dogs. Ragdoll kittens are very loving and they follow their owners around to demonstrate it.

In terms of their intelligence, one can train the kittens to play fetch and other games that need intelligence. Actually, anything can be done by them as long as human beings are involved. One can train kittens to follow commands like roll over, sit, and shake a paw. It is unfortunate that they cannot follow each word they are told just like other breeds of feline. This is because cats would rather do things their own way.

This breed is the best for people who wish for a cat that stays at sofa or ground level instead of one that climbs to the highest point of the home. Ragdolls are among the largest breed of cats with a weight average of about 10 to 20 pounds or more. They have proportionate legs, sturdy bodies with large frames. Despite their body size, they have small soft voices.

Females are usually smaller than males. Typical male ragdoll cats weigh 12 to 20 pounds or even more. On the other hand, females weigh 8 to 15 pounds. One distinguishing feature about kittens of this breed is their bright blue eyes. They have plush coats consisting mainly of long guard hairs. They lack a dense undercoat.

In conclusion, they also have their own disadvantages. Firstly, they do not meow which often leads many to think that they are pain resistant when in reality that is not the case. Secondly, although their lifespan is long, they tend to be prone to more health issues than other breeds. Some health problems occur particularly to this breed because of their genes.
