The Important Questions That You Need To Ask The Standard Poodle Breeder Before You Buy The Puppy

By Matthew Collins

If you want an active companion who will play very hard outdoors and come back to relax on the coach in the evening, then the purebred puppies could just be what you are looking for. It is very important for you to ensure that you research on the standard poodle breeder to make sure that you get what you want. In most cases, the prospective puppy buyers do not know those questions that they need to ask the breeders. The following questions will guide you if you are planning to buy a purebred puppy from a reputable owner.

You should ask about how long the individual has been involved in the breeding of this breed. Preferably, you should go for those breeders that have been in this business for several years. The breeders should have thorough knowledge on all the aspects related to this breed including genetics, nutrition, and so on.

There is a standard requirement on the quantity of litters that each dog owner should get in a year. You should factor this aspect in the interview by asking the owner on the litters that he gets per year. Avoid the high volume breeders who get more than 7 litters in a year because they could be less concerned on the welfare of the poodles and more concerned about the profit.

The interview process should also focus on the age of the parents of the puppy. Dog owners are advised against breeding the poodles before they reach two years. This is because of the increased susceptibility of the puppies to health problems that emerge at this age. The breeders are advised to wait until the poodles are two years before they begin the process of breeding them.

Ask the breeder to give you information on the health problems that are common in this breed. You should politely end this conversation if the dog owner claims that there are no inherited health problems in this breed. This is because all the dog breeds have genetic health issues that the dog owners need to be knowledgeable about. In this breed, the common health problems include progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, Addison disease, sebaceous adenitis, hemolytic anemia, cataracts, bloat, epilepsy, and so on.

Socialization is a very important aspect in poodles, and you should inquire on the steps that the dog owner has taken to socialize the puppies from the tender age. This is a companion breed and it needs to be very comfortable when it is around people. Ensure that the puppies are properly socialized because this will mean that they are well prepared to adjust to the new environment.

Inquire from the owner on the age at which they sell the puppies. It is recommended that the puppies should not be separated from their mothers until they attain the age of seven weeks. Separating the puppies early may make them aggressive because they have not interacted properly with the other litters. In fact, it is considered it is considered illegal for puppies to be sold before they reach seven weeks.

You can go ahead and begin the search for a reputable owner that you can buy the puppies from. Any good owner will not have a problem in providing you with answers to the above questions.
