The number of distinct goat breeds existent in the world today is very large. For those who are not interested in goats specifically, it is difficult to understand about the different breeds in existence, especially the less common ones. The Nigerian dwarf goats are among the most resourceful breeds of goats which are also very rare. Despite being initially not popular, the popularity of this breed is growing steadily. They are becoming more popular thanks to their colorful markings and small size body. Their compact body size makes them suitable for rearing since they require minimum space compared to larger goat breeds. They are reared by some people as pets despite being classified as dairy goats.

These animals are also very gentle and have a friendly personality as compared to other breeds of goats. As such, they can be handled by anybody, including little children. Provided they are well fed and watered, they cause minimum disturbance. In the United States, they have been approved as livestock dairy goat. This makes them eligible for FFA projects and youth 4H projects.

One among the main reasons as to why individuals prefer rearing them is because they are able to produce milk. The goat produces very high amounts of milk despite its small size. A she-goat that is well fed is capable of producing over two quarts of milk on a daily basis. Their milk is sweet when tested and it is highly nutritious as well.

Their milk is more preferable because it has very high butterfat content. It has a butter content of around 6 to 10 percent. The milk also has high protein content when compared to milk from other goat breeds. The milk is useful in making of products such as soap due to its high butterfat content. Most Nigerian Dwarf Goat owners however prefer to keep them as pets not as dairy goats.

There are certain standards that guide the conformity of these animals like in many other breeds of goats and animals. For instance, the body is supposed to be in balanced proportion, with the nose being straight and ears upright. They have soft coats with short to medium hair. It is allowed for them to have any color or combination of colors.

When raising the animals, it is essential to rear them in a clean pen. The pen must be free from dampness, pests like rodents, flies and drafts. Any wide gaps in the fence might allow them to get through and stray off.

One is required to ensure the goats are raised in a building that is well ventilated to ensure the animals are in their best shape. These animals do not require more space unlike other animals. Entertainment needs to be provided for them when they are reared in buildings in order to drive away boredom. They can be entertained by being provided with rocks, tree stumps or large cable spools.
