Useful And Essential Facts About Italian Greyhound Breeders

By Angela Sanders

The Italian Greyhound is a breed of dogs that is categorized among greyhounds. It is the smallest member of the greyhound category, with the acronym IG often used to refer to them. Although IG has a delicate appearance, it is an ancient breed that has been around for the last two millennia. It has the attentiveness of a lapdog, but the complexity of ancient hounds. Here are facts regarding Italian greyhound breeders.

A typical IG stands at 13 to 15 inches high when measured from the ground to the shoulders. The legs are long and have fine bones. They have characteristic leek, curving lines that define coursing hounds. They have been bred for a long period of time to be jesters and doting companions. They like attention a lot and will always prefer to stay on the bed or lap instead of the floor.

Unlike other toy breeds like Pomeranians, these dogs are not common, which poses a challenge when it comes to finding a good breeder to purchase from. One can however go through professional associations and clubs like AKC which can help one find a suitable breeder to purchase from. For recommendations, one should contact the AKC.

Other than the AKC, anyone with a good IG can also provide information on where they obtained it. There are chances of meeting with unethical breeders whose only aim is making money and not producing quality dogs. This makes finding a good breeder harder. A lot of income can be earned from the breeding industry and as a result, many people, including those without experience in breeding, are attracted to the business.

If one intends to buy a puppy with the intention of breeding in future, it is important to buy from a reputable breeder. A good breeder is usually very interested in the quality of their dogs and will provide all necessary conditions and supplies needed to produce healthy puppies. As such, one does not need to worry about diseases and other bad effects of low-quality stocks.

If one has the intention of purchasing these puppies for companionship, it is vital that the puppy is neutered or spayed when it reaches a given age. One should find out from the breeder when is most suitable to neuter or spay the hound. Some breeders usually sell puppies that are already neutered or spayed. As such, the buyer has an easier time when the puppy grows.

Given that IG is not quite common, not many people know about them. That is why the breeder should be able to provide information regarding best practices for caring, socializing, feeding, and treating the hound among many other aspects. Some breeding experts provide these information in the form of pamphlets or recommended reading sources on the internet.

There are many people who specialize in breeding IGs, Some have become experts that showcases their animals in shows and make many sales every year. Given the rarity of the breed, IG puppies can be slightly costlier compared to many more common breeds. One should be ready to have people turn around to look at the dog when walking down the street too.
