By Bernadette Martin

It is an instant reaction, you see a springer spaniel puppy and fall in love. Few can resist that wiggly bundle of joy that is so happy to see you. Well, before you run off and adopt the first pup that comes along, here are a few points to look for when searching for English springer spaniel puppies for sale in your area.

The quality of a spaniel is only as good as the breeder, and not all breeders are reputable. By spending some time researching kennels, then asking questions you will eliminate the possibilities of health problems, disposition issues, and physical abnormalities down the road. Here are some points to keep in mind before choosing a puppy.

The American Kennel Club sets standards for confirmation which are followed to the letter by responsible breeders. Springer spaniels come in two types, field quality and show quality. Dogs bred for show tend to be easier going, and have lower energy levels than their counterparts. Dogs bred for field work need to stay busy. If you desire a couch companion, then opt for pet or show stock.

Ask the breeder what their focus is: whether it is field, hunting, obedience, tracking, temperament, or show ring. Figure out exactly what you would prefer in a canine companion, and then search for breeders that focus on those traits. Also, find out about any genetic diseases that may be found in that particular line. An honest breeder should provide you with this information.

Reputable breeders allow potential owners to view their stock. Checking out both parents will give you an idea of what to expect from the puppy as it matures. You will be able to note the physical characteristics and personality traits that were passed on to the litter. Avoid kennels that do not allow you to interact with the dam and sire. They may have dogs that do not meet American Kennel Club standards.

Take a moment to ask the breeder how often the females are bred. This will give you some insight as to whether importance is placed on quality or profit. Responsible kennels do not start breeding their dogs until both the females and males are at least two years old. A canine personality is not set until then, plus this time allows for the breeder to weed out stock that exhibits health problems. If possible, purchase a puppy from a kennel that does x-rays of hips and elbows before breeding. This step guarantees the dam and sire will be free of genetic issues such as hip dysplasia.

The most important consideration to keep in mind is the personality of your potential pet. Some breeders will match personality types to new owners. Whether the kennel owner does this or you do, spend some time observing the litter. Create a list of qualities you desire in a dog. This way you will walk away with a companion that matches your lifestyle.

So, make sure to check out the parents, ask the kennel owners what they breed for, and spend some time interacting with the puppy. These simple steps will allow you to find the right companion. By keeping these points in mind, you will be able to find the ideal canine companion that will give you countless years of joy.
