By Angela Hill

Dogs, just like other pets, are susceptible to allergies. The most worrying fact is that allergies have no cure. However, there are several proven ways of allergy relief for dogs. Allergens include pollens, molds, grasses and mites. Eliminating these allergens is quite difficult. This is because pets are playful and may contact the allergens from outside the house.

Techniques that you can adopt to safeguard the health of your pet include dusting your house, ensuring that windows remain closed when it is dusty outside, changing filters in your air conditioners and vacuum cleaning. Note that cigarette smoke also causes allergies in pets. It is therefore advisable to smoke far away from your dog to ensure that it does not develop an allergy.

Keep pets away from garages, laundry rooms, damp basements and dusty barns. When mowing your lawn, the pets should also be kept far away. Clean the feet of your pet whenever it enters the house from playing outside. The animal should always stay indoors during early mornings and late evenings because pollens are high amidst these hours. Furthermore, do not use cedar kennels to shelter a pet.

Feed your dog with fresh pet food. Unfed food should be stored in a freezer using a stainless pet bowl made of glass rather than a plastic bowl. There are several natural remedies to relieve pets with allergies. You can introduce fatty acids to the diet of your pet to boots its immune system. It actually takes three to six weeks for the fats to dissolve in the body of the pet.

Yucca is widely used by pet owners these days as an effective and natural alternative for allergy relief. This product works well when combined with pet food. Alternatively, as a pet owner, you can opt to use the product as a body lotion for your pet. In this case, apply a small portion of the product on the fur after bathing the pet.

Shampoos and conditioners are also efficient in relieving allergies. To be precise, relief shampoo comprises of oatmeal and fatty acids as the primary ingredients. On the other hand, these ingredients ease itchy skin when applied on animal fur. Other shampoos comprise of soothing emollients and moisturizers that also ease allergic symptoms.

Antihistamines are usually used as the first drug whenever a pet has allergy. However, this drug is ineffective in about eighty percent of pets. Speak to your veterinary doctor to find out whether your dog reacts to antihistamines. If it does not react to the drug, obtain a prescription from the veterinary doctor and ensure that your pet takes the drug as prescribed.

Just like antihistamines, steroids are also manufactured to reduce the symptoms. However, these products take time before they are effective in the body of any pet. Furthermore, it is recommended that pets take a slightly higher dosage of steroids during their first time. As time elapses, this dosage can be reduced. This type of prescription mitigates common side effects like vomiting, diarrhea and irritability in pets.
