The Egyptian mau is a breed of cat that is mostly believed to have come from ancient Egypt. There are those who believe the breed goes way back to the Pharaoh era, but this is a contentious matter to be debated in detail. Despite the depictions on the walls of Pharaonic palace in Egypt, there is no other concrete prove of the cats originating from Egypt. This is worth knowing about Egyptian mau kittens for sale.

In the Egyptian language, the word mau means cat. Despite of the cat even being named using an Egyptian word, genetic evidence suggests that he breed may actually be from Europe. Genetic similarities between the Mau and other European breeds strongly suggest that the breed may actually be from Egypt. However, further investigation is necessary into this matter to determine the exact origin of the breed.

Today, not a lot of cats have spots naturally. Actually, the Mau is the only breed with a natural spotted coat among all spotted domestic cats. The Bahraini Dilmun whose origin is in Bahrain is the other breed that is naturally spotted. The Mau is thought to be the ancestor of most other domestic cats with spotted coats. Other cats that are spotted cannot be counted as naturally spotted because they result from crossbreeding.

This cat has a medium-sized body that comes in three approved shades. The three approved shades are smoke, bronze, and silver. Other common shades that one may encounter include blue spotted, blue, blue smoke, blue silver, and black. Cats with these additional shades are not allowed to compete in shows. Only bronze, smoke, and silver are allowed and approved to compete in cat shows.

The eyes of maus are large and are placed wide apart on the head. The color of the eyes is gooseberry green. The head is formed in a wedge like shape and is proportional to their bodies. Their coat is usually short and shiny. Since the cats have a single coat, they do not shed. It is therefore safe for individuals with allergies.

The fastest domestic cat is the Mau. They are known to run at speeds of over 30km/hr. Their bodies are built for speed and that is why they can run at such speeds. Usually, the skin fold below the belly of the cat is long. When the cat is in motion, the skin fold expands and allows it to fully stretch its legs.

The hind legs are also longer in comparison to front legs and they are very instrumental in gaining speed. Naturally, maus are not very friendly to strangers and other pets. They will appear withdrawn and only warm up to their main owner. They need time and effort to get them to warm up to new people and pets. Constant socialization gets them to become friendly with other pets.

Most cat breeds normally have a period of gestation ranging from 65 to 67 days. On the contrary, the Mau is not the same since they have a much longer gestation period. This breed has an average gestation period of 73 days.
