By Maryanne Goff

A new puppy can bring a lot of joy to the family; however, adopting a dog as a pet is a lifetime commitment. Before selecting a puppy, it is essential that one take time to learn about the special characteristics of the breed. While dogs do develop their own personality, they also have some of breed characteristics that may make them less than ideal for certain families. South Carolina Giant Schnauzer breeders want families to be aware before taking a puppy home.

Knowing the traits of a particular breed helps to know what to expect from the new pet. They can help to determine if the particular dog is likely to fit into your living situation. Be sure you consider both your own needs and those of the animal. If they do not mesh, trouble is just around the corner.

Giants of this breed are very intelligent but they are also energetic and large. They are very territorial. They tend to orient their lives toward their owners. Schnauzers can be very demanding and are not the right choice for all families.

While schnauzers are bright and responsive, they require grooming and Giants require more time for grooming that minis or standards. They are protective and loyal, remaining devoted to their families for the rest of their lives. In addition, Giants are large enough that they make a good guard dog.

Schnauzers are bred to be protective of their families. They do this instinctively and require no training in the area. In an unfamiliar individual wanders onto your property, the dog will alert with a low growl. However, they are also willing to get to know the people you trust and who come for regular visits. They will greet them warmly at the door; however, they will take time before warming up to those they do not know.

Giants depend on their people for exercise. They love energetic play with their master. They also have fun by roughhousing with any other large dogs in the home of the opposite sex. Choosing the right breed for your own activity level helps to ensure both your and your dog's happiness.

While schnauzers are often said to be hypoallergenic pets, this is a misnomer. They do shed less than other dogs; however, they do still shed regularly and will cause an allergic reaction in individuals who have allergies to other dogs. The hair that they shed often become tangled in their coat and will need to be removed on a regular basis, either by the owner or a professional groomer. It is important to keep their heads trimmed regularly to prevent their beautiful faces and expressive eyes from being hidden by a mop of hair.

Cute pictures are not enough reason for a family to purchase a puppy from any South Carolina Giant Schnauzer breeders. It is essential for the happiness of these dogs as well as for families that the family observes them in shows and the homes of others as well as learning as much as possible about them. Getting a new pet is a big decision and one that should involve a commitment for the lifetime of the dog.
