Putting Your Vomiting Dog At Ease

By Shari Evans

Dogs have very sensitive stomach yet, they tend to eat some things that are on the floor and dig on the garbage sack to find some treats. They are also likely to overeat and bloat themselves with food and water. Because of this, they are experiencing an upset stomach and other digestive problems which are sometimes being accompanied with vomiting. Every time that your dog vomits, they can experience pain and discomfort. In this condition, they would need your tender loving care to put them at ease and help them to recover.

Improving the Dog's Condition

It is not necessary for you to give medications on the first time that your dog had vomited. If this happens more than once on the same day, this is where you may need to take action. First, withhold food intake for 12 to 24 hours. This will help your pooch to recover from stomach irritation and it will also get the digestive process back on track. Prevent your dog from getting dehydrated but make sure that he won't drink excess water. Just make sure that the water is clean and fresh to help settle the stomach.

After the fasting, feed the dog with bland food on the first few hours. Provide small amounts of rice, chicken meat and cottage cheese every hour to help the dog's stomach to adapt on the reintroduction of food. You can also provide an antacid that you normally take if you have are suffering from hyper-acidity or upset stomach. It will also calm the dog's stomach and helps keep the acid down. If your dog won't eat or drink, ready a syringe for the water and pour little amounts on the cheek so that he can swallow it.

Comforting your Dog

Keep the dog indoors and let him stay in a cool, comfy and clean bedding. This will prevent him from being exposed to heat and bacteria outside which causes nausea. Do not bathe the dog while he is sick as this can only make the condition worse. Make sure that your pooch remains hydrated and provide an ice cube in case that he doesn't want to drink from the syringe. Some dogs are feeling hot and will search for cold water. Close the lid of the toilet to prevent him from drinking the cold water with bacteria.

Monitor your dog's condition and see what is in the vomit. It may not be a good view but this step is needed to determine the dog's status. A yellow vomit is stomach bile which is normal to be thrown up once but it can be dangerous if it happens for many times. Blood, feces and coffee-like vomit is also a dangerous case as death may follow in hours. On this situations, call your veterinarian immediately for treatments. Try to be on your pooch's side as much as possible. They too have emotions and every pain can be handled easier if you are giving some tender loving care.
