When Your Cat Wont Eat Properly

By Stacey Massey

People joke about the eating habits displayed by cats from time to time. It becomes an issues when the behavior is prolonged. There are many reasons why your cat wont eat and only by identifying the real issues will you get a solution. The condition will worsen with time and might lead to more dangerous complications.

A professional vet should be alerted in case the pet displays symptoms of loss of appetite. Immediate action is required considering that some conditions could be accompanied by complications. Diseases that are likely to aggravate the condition include kidney complications, pancreatitis, intestinal problems and cancer. External causes could range from an injury to an issue with the tooth.

A recent vaccination could cause the pet to exhibit similar behavior. It is possible for the feline to respond to the shot by displaying such side effects. This behavior is mostly mild and for a while though some could be life threatening. It should be communicated to the vet who will establish whether it is a normal reaction.

Reduced appetite may result from relocation or sudden change of environment. Your pet will be easily irritated and very unsettled in the new location. Traveling by plane or car has some effect regardless of the distance. It is common to have the cat nauseated after the travel.

Though physical illnesses are the most common causes for lack of appetite, other possibilities should be explored. They include anxiety and depression as a result of changed surrounding or routine. This will affect the most sensitive cats. It causes emotional imbalance that usurps its energy and appetite.

Not all breeds display a similar feeding habit. It is natural to find one that is poor in feeding even in the absence of physical injury or emotional issues. It is therefore necessary to understand the breed you are dealing with and not compare its mannerisms with any other.

Other adjustments that could be unsettling the pet are a change in the type or quality of food. The introduction of a new brand will be greeted by resistance and finicky behavior before eventual refusal or acceptance. The feline is tempted to eat when the food is warm. It is recommended that you can feed it on such strong smelling foods as sardines and tuna which are more palatable.

Changing the diet or brand of food given should be an option if the appetite does not increase. The feeding routine should be consistent in a way the pet can identify with eating. Clean utensils are an incredible appetizer as well as a clean environment. Check whether the nostrils are clean since this would affect the smell of food. The pet can be fed using hands.

The professional diagnosis when the cat wont eat is necessary to ensure that the prescription suggested solves the problems once and for all. With reasons varying from physical to psychological and environmental, the solutions vary. The presence of foreign bodies in the digestive system and issues relating to age should not be ruled out.
