Pet Therapy Works In Alcohol Treatment Centers

By Michaelo Rogers

Many animals across the United States are helping addicts to get sober. You may be asking yourself how this is possible. Most addicts that enter into a treatment program find sobriety to be a lonely experience. Addicts often deal with selfishness and only thinking about themselves. One lesson that an addict learns in rehab is to allow you to see all of the people that you are effecting because of your addiction. Rehabs are finding it useful to use horses, dogs, cats and farm animals to help people to get sober. Part of the treatment requires the addict to take care of a pet that needs them. The pets often require food, hay, bathing, cleaning out cages and other day to day tasks.

It is important to have animal therapy in a rehab program because it teaches addicts that you must learn to care for something other than yourself. When someone has a pet, they realize that there is love surrounding them. Most pets today are looking for attention and care. Most pets want someone to pet them and spend time with them. Addicts find that it is useful for them to spend time with an animal that wants to be with them as well. Over time, animals learn that there is always something to do. Animals are often there for people that need love and care. They are often the first ones to sense our sadness.

A lot of treatment centers are using horseback riding to help take stress away from addicts. Many addicts are constantly thinking about what hurts them and are trying to figure out ways to get help. When you are with a pet that loves you, you cannot help but to love it back. An animal is often your best friend when the world seems like it is working against you. The world is often in pain when it deals with addiction. Family members suffer along with the addict. If you can do anything to change the path of an addict, then it's worth investigating and checking out.

Getting sober today often helps addicts to find happiness and help. There is no happiness in alcoholism or addiction. When someone reaches out to a rehab for help, they are often turned away. It is hard to get someone to talk about their sobriety. However, you can often find the help that you need with time. Time heals all wounds and people often find the help that they need when they are in an addiction program that helps them to master what they are struggling with.

Many parents find that their child returns home a lot more caring because of what animal therapy can do for them. Other programs that are using animals are prisons. Many inmates find that animal therapy helps them to remain calm throughout the day and gives them something to love. Often, inmates receive no visitors and people lose sight of their needs for love and appreciation. It is important to have a treatment center that caters to all of your needs.
