By Essie Osborn

If it's beginning to feel as if it's time to get a new family member, you may want to consider getting a dog. A pet makes a great companion and playmate and if it's of the canine variety, it can also act as a form of protection. If you're living along the Eastern Seaboard, a great starting point is to look among the collie puppies for sale in PA.

Collies are probably the most famous of the herding dogs. They originated in Scotland as well as the northern parts of England. Here they were originally used to herd sheep, which is why they're also known as sheepdogs, and to drive livestock to the market.

The name doesn't refer to one specific breed but to a group of similar breeds. There are several different types of collies. They include the black and white border collie, the old English sheepdog, the Shetland sheepdog and the Welsh sheepdog. These breeds spread around the world and were used to develop new breeds, such as the American McNab shepherd, the New Zealand eye dog and the Australian kelpie and cattle dog.

Queen Victoria is said to have loved collies. President Lyndon Johnson did too and had a dog named Blanco. However, the most famous of all the collies in history was probably Lassie, the title character of many a film and television series.

The type of dog that Lassie was is called the rough or long-haired collie. Like Lassie, these dogs are usually a mix of browns and white. However, there are also mottled gray varieties. They have a face similar to that of a wolf and they have luxurious long hair.

If you're wondering what collies are like, simply think of Lassie's personality. Like Lassie, most collies are incredibly loyal and intelligent. They're good with children and they learn very quickly. Some collies, especially border collies, have lots of energy and stamina and do best if they can live an active life, such as on a farm.

Their long hair may make you want to think twice about collies but they actually don't demand lots of special care. It's normally sufficient to brush them once a week and they're very clean, so they don't have a strong odor. You'll need to give them plenty of exercise though, so they'll need to be walked every day. This will help if they have too much energy and it will also keep them fit and in good physical condition. Moreover, it will help you stay in shape too.

Many people simply look in the classifieds or online for collies. However, a breeders' association will help you find the most reputable breeders in PA and you'll avoid supporting puppy mills. A good pedigree is essential if you want to let your dog compete in dog shows. However, for a great companion you may want to check the local animal shelters. Rescue collies may not necessarily have a pure bloodline but they'll be happy to find a caring home and will be an asset to your family.
