Because a Swissy puppy is destined to grow up to be a large adult, there are plenty of common questions that are asked. Most want to know how big they will get. The answer to this is that males can grow to about 28 inches tall and females to about 27 inches. They will have short, but thick coats of fur which will need to be brushed each week. They do not shed much, but the brushing will keep that under control. Though they look as if they may tend to drool, they are considered a dry mouth breed. They can enjoy bathing, so this is not problematic even though they are very large. One of their best attributes is that they are very good with children and families.

Once a breeder has puppies old enough to leave for new homes, the entire litter will get a complete check up. A visit to the vet includes checking ears, noses, mouths and hearts for good health. Taking temperatures for wellness is a must, as are any required vaccinations. Warm bathing and professional toe nail clipping is included. Playing with their litter is also added to give them plenty of socialization time.

Greater Swissies originally came from the high mountains in Switzerland. Isolated in the higher elevations, they were bred as workers for farms. Jobs they did included serving as sentinels for the livestock, moving herds from one location to the next and pulling loads for their masters. Working as oxen or horses, they were strong and willingly did this work.

Due to their heavy coat, they can overheat when exercising or working too much in warm weather. For this reason, they tend to do better in the colder climates. They are strong, and they like to hike in mountains. Backpacking with their owners while helping to carry the load is a favorite activity because of their skilled carting abilities. If you assign a job to one, it will be enjoyed.

Females can grow to 27 inches tall, while males can be 28 inches or more. Usually in a combination of three colors, with heavy bones and stronger muscles, big paws and head show the capability they have for pulling weights and moving farm animals from place to place. They are confident and enjoy working.

Once a family decides to bring a Greater Swiss home, they find a gentle giant of a dog. Many have mentioned that their pet is the best any family could have. The loyalty displayed to their owners is legendary. Trainers and breeders alike know that these pets are faithful, yet bold, and always willing to help with whatever work is asked of them.
