Information About Home Veterinary Service Chester County Pet Owners Should Know

By Olivia Cross

Regular veterinary care is a important part of keeping pets such as cats and dogs healthy. Some pet owners may find this difficult though; perhaps they don't own a car, have a demanding schedule, or maybe their pet becomes very upset and gets aggressive when transported. If they choose to rely on a home veterinary service Chester County PA pet owners don't have to leave their homes in order for their pets to receive medical care.

A mobile vet is a fully licensed veterinarian who either exclusively provides house-calls, or this may only constitute part of their practice, and he or she may also provide office hours. The "traveling clinic" usually consists of a large van or motor home complete with the appropriate modifications required for administering veterinary care, and like a regular office, it must meet safety and hygiene standards.

Some veterinarians dedicate several hours each day to at-home visits, and work out of a clinic the rest of the time, while others operate solely on a "on-call" basis and strictly provide house-calls. Vets which fall into this latter category may not be able to see as many patients each day, but generally have more flexible schedules, and do not necessarily require a staff.

Enlisting the services of mobile vet is the best solution for anyone who has trouble getting around, pets who hate going in the car, and also animals which are ill, not easily transported, and require euthanasia. This allows the pet to peacefully pass away in its own home, and eliminates the need for its owner to make that sad, final trip to the vet's office.

The vet who provides at-home care to his or her animal patients also has the advantage of being able to observe the dog or cat in its regular living environment. This can provide helpful information which may explain the animal's behavior or specific conditions it is experiencing. The animal will also be more at ease at home than it would surrounded by strange people and other animals at an office.

The specific services offered depend on whether or not the vet also works out of a clinic and how well-equipped the mobile care facility is. Check-ups and vaccinations are commonly performed by most vets, but not all of them will perform surgery in such a setting. In instances where emergency or surgical attention is indicated, patients will be referred to a clinic.

It's normal to expect fee for mobile animal care to be a bit more than office rates because the vet has to account for travel costs and the time lost between patients. Yet, most customers are happy to pay a little more money for the convenience and reduced stress for their pets. Sometimes it results in savings, if a flat fee per visit is charged, since the appointment can include more than one pet.

It is not hard to locate a mobile vet in most areas. Other pet owners, veterinary offices, and the local humane society can usually recommend one or more. The yellow pages, and the Internet, are also likely to provide multiple listings for veterinarians who offer at-home care.
