Goats are hardy and rarely get sick. This is because they are mainly browsers. However it is critical to ensure you follow routine management practices to keep any infections at bay. You need to be on the lookout for physical deformities and signs of sickness such as loss of appetite, twitching, teeth grinding, lameness and diarrhea. Loss of hair is a sign of parasitic infestations.

Select animals based on their physical characteristics and performance history. Choose an animal that has a straight top line and strong legs to support its weight. If you are purchasing an older doe, the seller can provide you with accurate breeding and kidding records. This will give information on whether the doe gives multiple or single kid. Choose a doe that will give birth to multiple kids such as twins and triplets.

The head of does should show feminine refinement with both eyes bright and functional. Horn growth should not affect performance or create management problems. The udder of the right doe is large and well set between the hind limbs. The udder of the right doe is soft and not swollen. Ensure it has large teat that is soft and not cracked.
