The spread of the breed worldwide was done by Phoenicians. Initially, the dogs were owned by lace workers living in Nottingham. The workers carried their dogs to France following displacement caused by the Industrial Revolution.

The Frenchie became very popular in France and many more were imported from England. By the end of 1860, England had very few frenchies left while their popularity in France continued to grow. The popularity made the dogs to be given a French name. They became fashionable that they were sought by French writers, fashion designers, artists, prostitutes, and society ladies. It was developed a lot to diverge from the original bulldog in appearance and temperament.

Standards set by breed clubs require French bulldogs to have a small-medium structure, heavy bone, and smooth coats. They should be muscular, very active, and compactly built. Only specific colors are acceptable in breed standards. These colors are brindle, white, fawn, and tan. The most commonly occurring color is brindle and then fawn. Breed clubs do not accept any other colors and patterns.

Certain colors are associated with certain health problems that should not be found in Frenchies. This is the reason other colors are rejected by breed clubs. For example, alopecia is often associated with blue coloration. The shoulders and heads are wrinkled with the soft, smoothly falling skin. The brightness of their short coat is moderate.

The frenchies are good companion dogs and they need close human contact. Their exercise needs are fairly minimal, but they must be walked daily over short distances. They tend to sit with their hind legs spread out, something that have earned them the name clown dog or frog dog. They are very suitable for people who live in apartments because they are very calm.

Barking is very rare in this variety of bulldog. They only bark when they need attention from their owner. It shows affection and patience with the owner, especially small children. Females tend to protect children a lot. They can coexist well with other breeds and pets, but with proper introduction at the beginning.

The life span for the breed has been found to average between 8 and 10 years. They are poor at regulating body temperature because of their bulkiness and compacted airways. Thus, protection should be provided to them against extreme temperature conditions.
