Information On The Great Dane Dog

By Deborah Grimato

People who own dogs of the Great Dane breed caress them as the Gentle Giants, and this is the name they became well known all over the world. The ancestors of these dogs were initially used by the hunters of large wild animals like the boar and deer, and to fight with the wolves. Very old documents mention these dogs as being firstly bred and maintained by an ancient population called the Dane tribe, to assist them in hunting. Various documents of ancient civilizations, like the Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, mention these dogs.

The Great Dane Is A Huge Sweet Dog

Most people find it hard to believe that such a large and powerful dog can be in the same time a gentle one. This sweet temperament and its gentle behavior with humans aside its impressive size made the lovers of the Great Dane dog to say this is the King of the dogs or the Apollo of all dogs. They get along with different beings, like other pets in the family, even if they are dogs, are very loyal and affectionate to their owners and children are safe with the dogs of the Great Dane breed. These are tolerant dogs and they rarely bark at anyone. But even so, they make excellent watchdogs.

Because of their large size, these dogs need a lot of space to exercise, but they can adjust to smaller places for short periods of time. They are very playful dogs and, as puppies, they can produce large damages in your house. The mature dogs control their behavior very well, excepting the cases of effusive affection, when they are welcoming their master coming home by jumping on him and licking his face.

These dogs can be easily trained to properly behave and not to produce damages or to injure people, but the training must start when they are young dogs and not as massive as adults. It is very easy to train a Great Dane because it is a very intelligent dog. Most of all, these dogs need permanent human company.

Due to their huge size, the dogs of this breed consume a lot of food and need plenty of physical exercise, and their masters should provide them with both. In order to insure the proper daily exercise, you can use some toys when plying games of the type "the owner throws the ball and the dog brings it back". When you are not in the mood, you can skip playing, but you still need to make time for a long walk. Just looking to its size and you can be sure the Great Dane has a huge appetite. People who want to have such a pet should firstly consider this important aspect.

The Great Dane need just standard grooming. They have short coats. But regular combing helps removing the dead hair and parasites. They need to be bathed once in 2-3 months. They are basically clean dogs.

The only shortcoming in having this wonderful dog is that it has a very short life. The Great Dane seldom lives beyond 10 years and it is in retired mode from its 7th year onwards.

The history and origin of the Great Dane, which makes for very interesting reading, puts this dog's existence as early as 36 BC onwards, though the earliest mention as the variety we know it today was in Chinese scrolls around 11th century
