Hedgehog Breeders In Canada

By Alan Stables

African Pygmy hedgehogs have made their way round the world because of concerned people who have become concerned owners and hedgehog breeders. In areas such as Canada, it is a special challenge due to the colder climate for a large portion of the year.

Hedgehogs come from Central Africa where the climate is very warm. Since they are not used to it, experiencing cold temperatures for a long time could make them sick. Drastic temperature changes could also put them in unusual hibernation cycles and shocks or could even kill them.

There are listed hedgehog breeders scattered across Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Agencies such as the International Hedgehog Association, Hedgehog Breeders Alliance, or the people with Hedgehog Central who can help a prospective buyer find a reputable breeder and help arrange transport in a hedgie train if needed.

People involved in taking hedgehogs from the breeder's location to the buyers place form what is referred to as a hedgie train. One person will be responsible for the animal for part of the trip and will hand it to the next one until the pet gets to its final destination.

The buyer, on his side, will pay for standard shipping, taxes, tariffs, and related fees if required. When the trip takes more than a day, the buyer must secure warm cargo holds and ensure that arrangements for feeding and waste removal are organized.

Breeders covering large areas have gained lots of experience that help them match prospective buyers with the right companion. To minimize the stress involved in the moving and make sure that the hedgehog and owner are off to a good start, the breeders will handle all the details and provide care packages.

To avoid causing stress or illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhea or worst, death, the new owner has to maintain the diet that the breeder was providing to the hedgehog prior to its arrival. For a small additional fee, owners living in cold climates can get a travel pouch or carrier, blanket, toys, or other similar accessories.

Although some hedgehogs have lived as old as 8-10 years old, they usually live for about 3-5 years. Their soft eyes and mischievous personalities give them a very unique character. This explains why people from all around the world have been completely charmed by these amazing animals. It is because of their uniqueness that we can now count on passionate hedgehog breeders everywhere in the world.
