What Are Chickens Feeders & What Are They Made Of?

By Ernie Jones

If you are new to the poultry raising business you may consider what chickens feeders are the best ones. You may not even know for certain what chickens feeders are made from. It is fine to not know something as long as you are ready to learn so do not be ashamed to pose questions till you have enough information that you are feeling assured in your ability to look after these animals. You may even have to read additional articles on the topic to become entirely educated.

Chickens feeders are often made of a thin metal or from a thick plastic. When these chickents are babies the feeders will have divided holes so all the bitties can get inside the feeder is their beaks. This is because of the fact that the tiny chickens will rake all of their food on the yard and they can also get in their food and use the toilet.

A lot of the feeders designed for tiny birds will have a metal bottom that may be screwed onto a glass jar. Folk use jars that are used for canning food to hold the food and the divided serving portion will screw into place on the lips of these canning jars.

Most adult birds are fed direct from the ground because chickens essentially like to peck and scratch in the dust. They have to take in a certain quantity of grit or gravel in order for their gizzards to be in a position to crush the food that they consume, so people place their food on the ground to make them pick up the grit with the food.

There are automatic feeders that will hold whole bags of laying pellets, corn, or similar chicken foods you can use in your chickens coops so that you don't have to fret about being away and the chickens not getting properly fed. There are also automated water systems that can be installed so that you never need to worry when you're away the chickens might be without water.

Most water containers that are designed to go in chicken sheds and runs are constructed from a heavy gauge plastic. These boxes come in numerous different sizes, but when you have small birds that are not mature yet you want a water container that they can't get their head in or they will drown. A way to make the tiny birds safe is to go round the exterior of the water container where the water is available and place rocks or marbles there so that the small animal cannot drown themselves. When the birds are older you can remove the rocks or marbles and you do not have to buy water boxes of different sizes.

The plastics that chickens feeders and their water containers are made from need to be thick tohold the chickens from destroying it by pecking on it. The real drawback to this material is the undeniable fact that no matter how thick it is eventually being exposed to the elements of heat and cold will cause the material to dry rot and need to be replaced.
