Rottweiler Training: Ways To Train Your Furry Friend A Variety Of Tricks By Using Treats

By David Lamb

Who says fun and entertaining tricks are merely for small dogs like Chihuahua and Shih Tzu? Large and working dog breeds like the Rottweiler are capable of mastering such commands too so long as they're provided with correct Rottweiler training. Here are some helpful tips on how you can teach your dog with tricks that can make you proud and pleased Rottie owner:

- Train your pet the "Leave it!" command. This command is important in day-to-day circumstances. Use it if your dog attempts to grab food off a table or eat rabbit poop when you are out for a walk. To get the dog to obey your command, hold a treat in your hand (have one in the other hand, as well). Hold your hand open, and once he goes for the treat, close your hand as you say the command "Leave it!" Then offer him the treat on your other hand, and discard the one you told him to leave. Repeat this step a few times, and he'll learn how to "Leave it!" whenever you tell him to.

- Training a pet to roll over is a pretty simple task, just remember to have a handful of treats ready! First, have him on down position. Next, hold a treat close to the floor on one side of his head, little by little bring the treat up and over the dog's head to the opposite side. He must follow the treat with his nose, leading him to roll his whole body over. As he rolls over say out loud, "roll over." Repeat this until he rolls over with the command alone. Don't get annoyed if it takes several tries, but the moment he learns this trick he'll be the star of the dog park!

- To get your pet to crawl on command, have him begin in a lying position. If you're tall enough or your pet is small enough, place your leg, heel on the floor, knee up, in front of him. Take a treat and guide him underneath your leg. If your dog can't fit beneath your leg, find an additional low threshold, like a chair, that he can crawl under. This makes him have to scoot forward to obtain the treat and will diminish his desire to stand up to follow your hand.

Successful Rottweiler training can be accomplished by utilizing positive reinforcement such as treats. But keep in mind to avoid rewarding your pet with a treat at all times. If you do, he will come to expect the treat each time and when you stop rewarding him with treats, the compliance halts as well. Instead, reward him with treat randomly so he won't start to expect it.
