Great Advice On How To Train Your Dog

By Karl Morison

Some say a dog owns you, you do not own a dog. Once you have a pup in your household, you are likely to agree. That said, your responsibilities in caring for the dog will be great. Read on to find out what you need to know about caring for your dog correctly.

If you are planning to take your dog on an extended car-ride, talk to your vet about motion sickness medication first. Avoid feeding him before setting out to prevent queasiness and vomiting and make sure you buy him bottled water if you are traveling to any destination that is known to have issues with water quality.

When you have medications of any sort, keep them where your dog cannot get to it. If your dog has access to these pills, there can be fatal consequences. If your dog gets to your medication, you should call your veterinarian right away.

Get your dog neutered. Research shows that doing this can make your animal live longer and reduce their cancer risks. Also, dogs that are fixed lose their desire to stray from the home, lessening the chance of them getting lost or hurt.

Keep your dog's teeth in tip tip condition. Just like humans, a dog can suffer from toothache, gum disease and even tooth loss. Regular brushing will ensure that that his teeth and gums stay healthy and strong. Without regular brushing, it is estimated that dental disease will affect up to 80% of dogs by the age of three. As well as dental cleaning by a vet, make sure that you brush your dog's teeth regularly.

If you notice your dog gets dry skin in the winter, you probably need to brush him or her more often. Doing so will get rid of old fur and help get their oil glands working properly. Try brushing once in the morning and once in the evening to see if it makes a difference for your pet.

When you buy dog food, avoid the cheap stuff. In the long run, it is beneficial to be feeding your dog high quality, nutritious food. You'll have to pay more, but you can be certain your dog gets the right vitamins and minerals from good sources.

Be sure to address your dog's bad behavior when you first notice it. You should never ignore bad behaviors when they are puppies because this will make it a lot harder to correct down the road. Your dog could hurt somebody, including you, so keep him under control.

Since you do own your dog, it is your responsibility to care for him the right way. You have taken the time to read this article, so you must also take the time to implement its advice. As you start to do the things you have learned here, you will find things become easier for both you and your dog.
