Choosing Games For Dementia Patients

By Kathrine Franks

As a caregiver for patients with Alzheimer's and dementia. You understand that getting them involved in stimulating activities is very important. Their brains need to be stimulated all the time. This way, their state of forgetfulness is not going to end up escalating. You do need to know what things have to be done to ensure that you do not only care for them right, but you help them through useful activities too.

A good approach that might benefit these patients better would be to allow them to play games. There are games for dementia patients that might help keep them occupied and will also ensure that there is always going to be brain stimulation in them. This will ensure that they wont remain idle as we as their brain remains being used regularly. Doing this daily might actually have really good benefits.

It is important for carers to have a good understanding of the condition, they cannot be expected to offer the right help and the right attention to these people when they are not properly educated of what it is that they are going through. This is the best time to learn about the condition and what are the things that a caregiver can d to ensure that its progress is not going to be fast.

Before you let the patient engage in any activity, this important that he is in the right setting, it is always very important that one is able to choose the right place where these activities should be done so he is sure that the patient is at ease and comfortable the entire time. He will be more motivated to try things out when he is very much at ease with the environment.

There are a lot of activities that you would want these patients to engage in as their pastime. The key here is for you to find something that they may be interested and doing, but will keep them stimulated as well. It is not enough that it is interesting. It has to contribute something towards ensuring that their brain activity is going to be enhanced in the process.

See if you can let them play with puzzles too. This is a very simple activity to play but it can be very stimulating. The fact that they are going to have to use their brain to compare the picture that they are working on is a good reason to make them engage in such activities. Finding words and crosswords that are simple enough would be good choices too.

Scarp booking and collecting photos can be fun too. They allow patients to look into old photographs that they may still recognize themselves. Aside from allowing them to discuss about the activity and the pictures that the are seeing, this activity might help make it easier for them to recall events and even people in their lives whom they are having a hard time recalling now.

Reading activities may be a good idea. This would allow the patient to read passages that might help them get the brain activity that they need. This is a very good exercise that will not only allow them to get entertained whole on their free time, this will help ensure proper brain activity as well. You can either let him read the passages for you read the passages yourself.
